The St. Lawrence University women's basketball posted a 10-2 run over the last 7:32 of play, holding off an upset bid by the Union Dutchwomen and taking a 49-47 victory in the Burkman Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Kelly Legg scored nine of her 13 points in the final minutes to propel the Saints out of a six point hole to extend the team's win-streak to eight games.

"This was a hard-fought battle against a team that always plays hard and is well coached," said St. Lawrence Head Coach Dan Roiger. "I was really proud of how our team responded after the timeout in the final minutes. It was really about our defense though, as we struggled offensively but got enough stops to stay in the game, and then made a few plays in the final minutes to win it. Now we face another team that plays a great zone when we go to Skidmore Tuesday. It certainly isn't going to get any easier but that is the way you want it this time of year."

St. Lawrence, which led 28-24 at the half, improves to 11-4 with a 7-0 mark in the Liberty League. Ten different players put points on the board led by Legg's 13 points and four rebounds. Junior Erica Spera had nine points, seven rebounds and a team-high three steals.

Union was led by two in double-figures, and falls to 7-8 overall with a 3-4 mark in the league. Brittney Kenney posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while adding five assists and a steal. Rachel Beaulac had 11 points, while Shayla Madden, Kate Thomas and Kelsey McDonald combined for 20 points.

St. Lawrence stretched its lead to as many as six points in the opening minutes of the second half on a jumper by first-year student Maddy Wetterhahn at 15:14. The Dutchwomen, however, cut the deficit and tied the game, 36-36, when Beaulac converted an old-fashioned three-point play at 10:40. An 11-3 run in favor of the visitor to take a 45-39 lead forced the Saints to call timeout, which proved to be key, as a 3-pointer by Legg on the next possession, followed by a layup by sophomore Cassie St. Hilaire brought the home team back to within one, 45-44.

Neither team scored over the next 3:00 minutes until Spera broke the scoreless drought and gave St. Lawrence its first lead in over 7:00 minutes. On the next Dutchwomen possession, Kenney found Madden under the basket to put Union back on top 47-46. Down at the other end, Legg drove the lane, spun around her defender into the paint and was fouled but made the layup. She converted the free throw at 2:32 to give her team what turned out to be its final lead at 49-47.

The teams exchanged empty possessions before St. Lawrence lost the ball on a shot clock violation with :09 seconds remaining. Kenney had a bid from the top of the key to tie the game at the buzzer, but Legg rejected the shot to preserve the slim 49-47 victory.

The Dutchwomen owned a 41-33 advantage on the boards, but committed 21 turnovers to the Saints 13. Both teams struggled from the floor as St. Lawrence shot 33.3% and Union shot 37.0%.

The Scarlet and Brown will travel to Saratoga Springs, NY on Tuesday to take on Skidmore College at 6:00pm. Meanwhile, Union will host RIT in Schenectady, NY.
