CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team played right with William Smith for most of the first three quarters on Saturday afternoon, but the Herons went on an 18-4 run during the third and fourth quarters to defeat the Saints 64-57 at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Saints, who fell to 5-10 overall, 2-5 in the Liberty League, cut what had been a 14-point deficit down to five points with a pair of free throws by Kaelyn Kohlasch with less than 20 seconds left, but didn't have enough time to complete the comeback.

Cara Waterson led the Saints with 17 points, going 6-for-8 from the field and hitting all three of her 3-point attempts. Shayna Davner added 15 points and eight rebounds for St. Lawrence.

St. Lawrence held William Smith to 29.6 percent shooting in the first half, and led 24-21 at halftime thanks to 3-pointer by Kohlasch right before the break. But the Herons, who are the second-best shooting team in the league, came back to hit 50 percent of their shots from the field in the second half.

Melanie Patterson led the Herons with 24 points. Mia Morrison added 16 points for William Smith, which improved to 13-3 overall, 8-0 in the Liberty League.

Kohlasch finished with eight points for St. Lawrence, and the team was a season-best 16-for-16 from the free throw line and were 7-for-21 from 3-point range.

St. Lawrence goes on the road on Tuesday to face Skidmore in a Liberty League contest in Saratoga, N.Y.
