ROCHESTER -- With five seconds remaining, Stockton University's Najha Treadwell hit the first of two free throws to give the Ospreys a one-point lead and that modest advantage was enough to hold off the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team as the Golden Knights saw their season come to an end with a 60-59 defeat Friday evening.

The Golden Knights fell to 22-6 overall with the loss while Stockton improved to 22-6. The Ospreys advance to the second round at 7:00 pm on Saturday evening.

Nerves clearly were at the forefront in the opening minutes for Clarkson as the team settled for a pair of 3-pointers and turned the ball over in its first five possessions of the game before breaking through with a basket at the 7:40 mark on a layup from Madison Shea. Clarkson's defense was tough in the early going, forcing six turnovers in the first six minutes, but when Stockton was able to get shots off, they went in (4-for-6). That quick start fell apart for the Ospreys in the final four-plus minutes, however, as Stockton made just one of its next seven shots from the field. Despite that less than stellar run, Stockton never trailed in the first quarter because Clarkson couldn't convert either, shooting just 3-for-18 in the first period. The Knights were able to keep the game close by going 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

A few turnovers to start the second quarter muted Clarkson's offense, and the Knights missed their first few shots of the quarter. However, some solid interior passing provided some easy looks to tie the score up at 19-19, and a 3-pointer from Ashley Loggins right after the media timeout in the second quarter gave Clarkson its first (22-19). Clarkson held the lead for the majority of the second half, edging out to a three-point advantage on a layup and free throw from Devin Sorell in the final minute. Stockton pulled back to within one in the waning seconds and Loggins last second 3-pointer was short as Clarkson went into the locker room up by one, 29-28.

Loggins finished the half with eight points and four rebounds, though she shot just 2-for-11 overall with both of her makes coming from beyond the 3-point line. Sorell tossed in seven points and Shea added six points and three assists. Loggins did a solid job defensively on Stockton's top offensive player, Sasha Williams, holding the 6-foot-2 sophomore to five points on just 2-for-6 shooting, though Williams was able to get seven rebounds, including four on the offensive end. With Clarkson doing a good job of defending Stockton's interior players, it was Lauren Bowler who led the Ospreys in the first half with seven points, her season-high for 2015-16. The senior guard also had three rebounds and three assists in the opening 20 minutes.

Devin Sorell scored five quick points at the start of the third to push Clarkson up by three points, but Stockton was able to roll off six straight points on two easy looks inside and a pair of free throws to gain a 41-38 advantage at the 5:20 mark. Stephanie Grobe was whistled for three fouls in the first half and was sent to the bench midway through the second, but it was Madison Shea who got called for her fourth with more than 15 minutes to play, putting the Knights in an inconvenient spot. Without their primary ball handler, the Golden Knights struggled to get much going on offense and turned the ball over against modest pressure near midcourt. Stockton took advantage of the miscues and went on a 7-0 run to expand its lead to eight points (48-40) with 2:14 remaining in the period. The run was finally halted on a mid-range jumper from Grobe. A three-point play gave the Ospreys their biggest lead of the game (51-42) on a layup and free throw, but Loggins responded with a 3-pointer at the other end to keep the Knights within a decent margin. The difference in the third quarter for the Ospreys was their ability to control the glass (15-5 edge in rebounds), eliminating many second-chance opportunities for the Knights.

Back in the game, Shea opened the scoring for Clarkson in the fourth quarter, sparking a 6-0 run which tied the game up at 51-51 at the 6:31 mark. Just 45 seconds later, Loggins jumped a passing lane for a steal and was fouled at the other end, making her second free throw to help the Knights regain the lead. It would be short-lived, however, as a turnover by the Knights and a jumper by Najha Treadwell lifted Stockton back up by one. The teams traded the lead back and forth on the next two possessions, but Grobe shredded her way through traffic for a layup to put Clarkson up by one. That was a key make, but the next trip down the court for the Knights proved to be even bigger as Sorell buried a 3-pointer with a player in her face. A two and a half minute scoring drought for Stockton was emphatically ended on a 3-pointer by Taylor Christina to get the Ospreys back within one, and a free throw by Treadwell following her defensive rebound on a Clarkson miss tied the game at 59 with just 35 seconds to go. Loggins missed a jumper on the other end and Alyssia Marsal looked to be in position for a rebound, but was whistled for a foul while seemingly harmlessly boxing a player out on the miss, giving Stockton an opportunity to win the game from the free throw line. Treadwell made the first of her two free throws to give the Ospreys a one-point lead, and Loggins was unable to convert a jumper at the other end, leaving the Clarkson players and their fans dumbfounded by the turn of events.

Loggins finished with 18 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Sorell chipped in 15 points and Grobe added 12 points. Shea also produced eight points, six boards, four assists and two steals. Treadwell led Stockton with a double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Sasha Williams had 11 points, 13 boards and four assists. Stockton held a 46-28 advantage on the glass.
