Hamilton, NY - Through two periods of play it appeared as if the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team might be headed to its first-ever scoreless tie, but senior Gabrielle Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) ended the threat with a goal in the opening minutes of the third period to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 ECAC Hockey victory over Colgate Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights conclude the regular season with a 21-8-5 record overall and a 15-5-2 mark in ECAC Hockey action. Clarkson, which finished third in the ECAC Hockey standings, will host Quinnipiac next weekend at Cheel Arena in a best of three-games series for the right to move on to the semifinals the first weekend of March. Colgate finished outside the league playoffs with a 10-21-2 overall record and 5-15-2 mark in the league.
Clarkson controlled the play in the first two periods with a 26-14 edge in shots, but the Golden Knights had nothing to show for their efforts as Kimberly Sass was on task in goal for the Raiders. It wasn't until the third period that the Knights were finally able to slip one past Sass, as Kosziwka tallied her seventh goal of the season at the 1:34 mark of the final period. Junior Danielle Skirrow (Trenton, ONT) and senior Katelyn Ptolemy (Dinsmore, SASK) added their 11th and 13th assists, respectively, on what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Colgate had an opportunity late in the period to tie the game, but Clarkson would not allow the Raiders a chance at the Knights cage. Kali Gillanders (Kyle, SASK) was whistled for a body checking penalty with less than two minutes to go, but the Knights kept the puck in the Colgate end, getting off seven shots in the final 1:57, including three on goal. The late rush by Clarkson never allowed the Raiders to pull their goalkeeper for yet another extra attacker, and the Knights held on for the victory.
Sophomore Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) recorded her seventh shutout of the season, making 19 saves for the Knights. Sass finished with 38 stops for Colgate. Both teams went 0-for-6 on the power play, and Clarkson held a 39-19 edge in shots.
