New York, NY - Senior forward Chrissy Scanlon (Queensbury, NY) scored a team-high 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field, but the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team's offense struggled out of the gate in a 62-40 loss against New York University at the NYU Tip-Off Tournament Friday evening.
Clarkson will play in the consolation game on Saturday against the loser of the FDU-Florham vs. St. Joseh's College-Brooklyn game that followed the Golden Knights' contest.
The Knights' offense struggled at the start with just nine points through the first 13 minutes of the game. Following a 3-pointer from freshman Leighann Tomita (Cerritos, CA) late in the first half, Clarkson trailed by just eight, 27-19, but the Violets scored the last six points of the half to enter the break with a 14-point advantage.
Clarkson would never get closer than the 14-point deficit that it saw at the midway point, crawling back to within that gap on a few occasions, with the latest coming at the 11:05 mark of the second half (44-30). However, Clarkson's offense could not overcome the deficit, scoring 10 more points in the final 11 minutes for its final total.
Scanlon shot 4-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free throw line for her 12 points. Freshman Taliah Pounds (Watervliet, NY) added in nine points and seven rebounds, while Tomita tossed in six points to go along with her five steals.
Cara Bonito led NYU with 11 points, and three others scored 10 points for the VIolets. Shelby Coon posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Bianca Storts nearly matched her with 10 points and seven rebounds.
