Schenectady, NY - Freshman Ashley Loggins (Albany, NY) produced a big second half en route to a career-high 25 points as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team endured a 63-42 loss against Union College in the Liberty League conference opener Friday night.
The Golden Knights dropped their third straight game and moved to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in the Liberty League, while Union moved up to 7-3 and 2-0. Clarkson will take on Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.
Union began the game with seven straight points in the first three-plus minutes before the Knights got on the scoreboard, but Clarkson was able to stay within striking distance for the next seven minutes, trailing by just seven points at the 8:49 mark. However, the Dutchwomen went on a 16-4 run in the final seven minutes of the half, including a 9-0 run in the last 2:36, to take a 20-point advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, the Golden Knights, dressing just eight players, were able to play even with the Dutchwomen, never trailing by more than 23 and coming back to within 16 points, with the two teams essentially trading points back and forth.
Loggins led all scorers with 25 points, scoring 18 in the second half with five field goals and eight free throws, while adding in other game-highs in rebounds (14) and steals (7). No other player for the Golden Knights scored more than six points. Kate Thompson led Union with 19 points, shooting 9-for-15 from the floor, and eight rebounds. Shayla Madden also kicked in 16 points, going 5-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the 3-point line.
