POTSDAM, N.Y.—An extra-attacker goal from sophomore forward Jessica Silveira with 38 seconds left gave the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (1-4-1, 1-4-1 ECAC West) a 5-5 tie with Oswego State (2-3-2, 2-1-2) on Saturday afternoon. Senior assistant captain Caitlin Manahan led the Bears with a goal and two assists and freshman forward Izzy Fayerman contributed two goals.

The Bears drew first blood at 10:41 of the first period, capitalizing on a Laker major penalty. Sophomore defenseman Brittany Lucky gave Potsdam a 1-0 lead with assists from Silveira and freshman forward Alexandra Holowka. At 14:24, Oswego sophomore forward Megan Howe made the most of a Bear turnover with an unassisted goal. Nearly three minutes later, Laker sophomore defenseman Jocelyn St. Clair gave Oswego a 2-1 lead. The Lakers carried the 2-1 advantage into the first intermission.

In the second period, several early Potsdam penalties shifted the momentum further in Oswego’s favor. At the 9:21 mark, senior forward Kelly Collins struck on the power play to extend the lead to 3-1. With under three minutes remaining in the period, former Bear, sophomore forward Emma Smetaniuk gave Oswego a 4-1 advantage.

Potsdam mounted a furious rally in the third period, outshooting the Lakers 17-3. Manahan started the rally at the 4:13 mark with an unassisted tally. At 7:19, Fayerman buried her first to cut the lead to 4-3. With less than five minutes remaining and Potsdam on the power play, Laker senior captain Kathryn Sbrocchi scored a shorthanded marker to put Oswego back up by two goals. Fayerman netted her second just 35 seconds later to get the Bears back within one. With 58 seconds left, Potsdam pulled junior goaltender Jen Conophy for an extra attacker. With 38 seconds on the clock Silveira knotted the score at 5-5 after a scramble in front of the net.

Both teams traded chances in overtime, but were unable to get the game-winner.

Conophy finished with 29 saves for the tie. Oswego freshman Bridget Smith stopped 26 shots. Potsdam was 1-6 on the power play and the Lakers were 1-5.

Potsdam Head Coach Jay Green felt fortunate to get the point in the league standings.

“We only played one period of hockey,” said Green. In the third period we executed and played with intensity. So hopefully tomorrow we can get three periods.”

The Bears square off with Lakers again tomorrow at 2 p.m.
