CORTLAND, N.Y.—Sophomore defenseman Brittany Lucky scored two goals and added an assist to lead the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (6-7-1, 3-7-1 ECAC West) to a 5-2 victory over Cortland (2-8-1, 0-6-1) Friday night. Senior forward Caitlin Manahan recorded four assists for the Bears and junior goaltender Jen Conophy stopped 20 shots for the win.

Sophomore forward Jessica Silveira got the Bears on the board first at the 7:13 mark of the first period, driving home a rebound off a Manahan blast. Just over three minutes later, Erika Osbourne tied the score on the power play. At the 15:37 mark, a Lucky power-play goal gave Potsdam the lead for good. Senior Breanna Roy and Manahan each assisted on the goal. The Bears carried the 2-1 lead into the intermission.

Potsdam dominated the play in the second period, outshooting the Red Dragons 15-4. Despite the pressure, the Bears only extended their lead by one. At 11:50, senior captain Breanna Roy scored a four-on-three power-play tally with assists from Roy and Lucky.

Lucky got her second goal on a shot from the point just 1:38 into the final 20 minutes to increase the lead to 4-1. Silveira and Manahan each assisted on the goal. Amanda Maddalena got Cortland back to within two at 7:55, but Conophy shut the door the rest of the way. Ten minutes later, Roy tacked on a final goal with a slap shot through a crowd to close the scoring at 5-2. Silveira and Manahan recorded the final helpers of the contest.

Katie Double made 35 saves in goal for Cortland. Potsdam outshot the Red Dragons 40-22 on the night. The Bears were 3-5 on the man advantage and Cortland finished 1-5.

“The bus ride to Cortland was six hours long and treacherous, but it didn’t seem to affect us,” said Potsdam Head Coach Jay Green of the snowy trek to Central New York. “We played very well tonight. The line of Manahan, Silveira, and Alexandra Holowka was the best one on the ice. And Jen Conophy came up with some big saves to keep the momentum in our favor.”

The Bears look to sweep the season series with the Red Dragons at Cortland tomorrow at 2 p.m.
