Canton, NY – Vili-Jesper Koivula had a hand in all four goals scoring twice and adding a pair of assists and Josh Erickson recorded his second shutout in four games as the SUNY Canton men's hockey team defeated Route 11 rival SUNY Potsdam, 4-0, Friday evening in the Roos House.

The Roos (6-9-2) got on the board first at 6:36 of the opening period. Trenton Yule collected a failed Potsdam (4-9-2) clearance at the near boards and fired a long-range shot. Vili-Jesper Koivula stood out in front and redirected the puck home past the glove of Brendan McMenimen for the early lead.

Canton doubled their lead seven minutes later on the power play. With the Roos cycling the puck in their offensive zone Joey Vocino found Tyler Bullard at the point. He played a quick pass to Koivula at the lower left circle as he beat McMenimen over the blocker from point blank range. The hosts took a 2-0 lead into the locker room as they outshot the Bears 18-4 in the opening period.

The Roos added to their lead at 18:12 of the middle period when Joey Vocino put home his own rebound for his sixth goal of the season. Josh Sova and Koivula earned helpers on the power play goal.

Canton took a 4-0 lead at 8:55 of the third when Koivula hit Bullard with a cross-ice pass from left to right and Bullard quickly one-timed a pass to Sova in the slot. The junior captain went bar-down to give the Roos their third power play marker of the night and his seventh goal of the season.

Josh Erickson stopped all 24 shots he faced in his second shutout of the season, while he improved to 4-0-1. McMenimen made 31 saves for the Bears. Canton was 3-for-7 on the power play, while killing off all three of their penalties.

These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday at Maxcy Ice Arena at 7 p.m.
