Harrisville, RI – Sophia Koenig scored her first collegiate goal but the SUNY Canton women's hockey team dropped a 2-1 road decision at Nichols College in the Colonial Hockey Conference opener for both teams on Friday.

McKenna Gernander and Mel McAleer scored power play goals just 26 seconds apart to give the Bison (1-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 CHC) a 2-0 lead less than seven minutes into the contest.

The Roos (1-1-0 overall, 0-1-0 CHC) outshot Nichols in every period including dominating 18-2 in shots over the final period before Koenig broke through on an unassisted marker at 8:13. Despite the impressive performance in the final frame Canton was unable to find the equalizer.

Cassandra Goyette stopped 44 of the 45 shots she faced, while Brooke Susac made 16 saves for the Roos.

Nichols went 2-for-5 on the power play, while Canton was 0-for-5 with the skater advantage.

These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday at 4:40 p.m.
