Knights Women's Soccer settle For 3-3 tie versus Skidmore

Potsdam, NY – Three different players scored for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team on Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn't enough for the Golden Knights to pull out the win as the Green and Gold settled for a 3-3 Liberty League tie with Skidmore.

The Golden Knights moved to 4-2-3 on the season and 1-0-1 in Liberty League games, while Skidmore saw its record go to 2-5-1 and 0-1-1.

The tie marked the first time that Clarkson scored three goals in a game but didn't come away with a win since September 3, 2006, when the Knights fell 4-3 to Bridgewater State in the second game of the season.

The Golden Knights took little time getting on the board with one of their fastest goals in program history. Just after the kick off, the Knights picked up control in their own end and moved the ball through the midfield, and Madison Kather controlled a pass on the right wing about 35 yards out. She then sprinted down the sideline and brought the ball almost to the end line where Skidmore goalkeeper Alyssa Rollins challenged her. Kather then calmly crossed the ball back through the middle to a wide open Camryn Careccia, who delicately tapped the pass into an open net with just 27 seconds expired from the game clock.

A little over 11 minutes later, Skidmore tied the game up on a defensive miscue. A pass was sent into the middle of the field about 25 yards out where both Elyse Green and a Clarkson defender converged upon one of Skidmore's forwards. However, in an attempt to clear the ball away from both the forward and any other oncoming players, the ball was mistakenly hit into the back corner of the Clarkson net at 11:59.

After 12 more minutes of back and forth play, Clarkson regained the lead with a strong individual effort from Madison Kather. The senior accepted a throw in 70 yards away from the Skidmore goal, used her head to flick it the other way and then eluded a Skidmore defender near midfield with a ball off her knee. From there, it was a sprint to the goal, and Kather was able to out run the Thoroughbreds defense, using her left foot at the last second to scoot a shot past Rollins at the 24:41 mark.

Clarkson extended its lead to 3-1 less than 10 minutes into the second half with another impressive individual effort, this time from freshman Ashley Abel. The defensive-minded midfielder took the ball way from a Skidmore midfielder a few yards over half and then weaved in and out of the Thoroughbreds defense, beating four of them and then going with the left foot on a hard grounder past Rollins to make it 3-1 at 53:59.

Despite the deficit, Skidmore kept at it on offense, as Elyse Green had to make a sprawling save midway through the half to keep the margin at two. The Thoroughbreds beat the Clarkson keeper a few minutes later, though, when Christina Sanzari hit a left-footed shot into the opposite corner, pulling Skidmore to within 3-2 with 16 minutes remaining. Ten minutes later, the Thoroughbreds struck again as Yasmine Boukari took the ball from the left wing and maneuvered around a few Clarkson defenders, striking it with her right foot as she was falling over. The ball had enough English on it to surprise Green, who had the ball glance off her outstretched hands on a dive.

Although plenty of offense preceded them, there weren't many chances to be had in the two 10-minute overtime periods.

Skidmore finished with a 20-12 edge in shots, but Clarkson owned an 8-2 lead in corner kick chances. Elyse Green finished with 11 saves for the Knights, while Alyssa Rollins made five saves for Skidmore.
