Potsdam, NY – Junior Giulia Mahoney scored once and assisted on another goal to help lead the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to a 2-0 non-league win over Cortland State on Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights edged over .500, improving to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Red Dragons suffered their first loss of the season and dropped to 2-1.

Though the Red Dragons owned a 7-2 edge in shots in the first half, most of their better scoring chances came on crosses and scrums in front rather than actual shots with most of the real attempts going well high or wide. Both of Clarkson's attempts were on goal, to the left side of Cortland goalkeeper Abby Miller. Cortland controlled the play for the first 15 minutes or so, but for the final 30 the game was played with even possession.

Clarkson broke through in the first third of the second half. From the right side, Giulia Mahoney sent a ground ball through traffic to the opposite side, finding senior Summer Gillespie on a run. Gillespie then beat her defender with a one touch and chipped the ball past Miller for the score at 59:40.

The Golden Knights tacked on another goal late when a Cortland miscue gave Clarkson an insurance score at 84:19. Alicia Bushey picked up the ball on a turnover on the right side and tapped the ball to Mahoney who was running on the same side. Mahoney then took the ball the rest of the way, hitting the ball into the right corner of the goal for a 2-0 advantage for the Green and Gold.

Elyse Green was busy in the Clarkson frame, making eight saves on 18 total shot attempts by the Red Dragons. The crossbar also denied Cortland twice in the final 10 minutes, as the Red Dragons were unable to get on the scoreboard at all.

Clarkson trailed in shots (18-10) and corner kicks (3-1). Green stopped eight shots for the Knights and Miller made four saves for the Red Dragons.
