Knights women's soccer cruises by Raptors 2-0

Potsdam, NY – A first half goal by freshman Tori Sailor sparked the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Bard College Raptors on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improve to 5-9-0 (1-4 Liberty League) and host Vassar College tomorrow afternoon at Hantz Turf Field. The Raptors fall to 4-10-1 (0-6 Liberty League) and travel to take on St. Lawrence tomorrow afternoon.

Clarkson dominated possession early and had multiple opportunities in the opening minutes of the game. In the 14th minute, Sailor moved toward the offensive end and gathered the ball outside of the box. The goalkeeper came out the play the ball and Sailor blasted a shot into the back of the net to give the Knights the 1-0 lead.

After dominating much of the period, the Knights backline had to stand tall as Bard took three straight corner kicks within a minute. The first two were well-defended and the Raptors' best scoring chance on the third attempt, but a header hit the post and was immediately cleared by the Knights' defense. Clarkson outshot Bard 5-3 in the first half.

The Green and Gold put the game away for good at the beginning of the second half, when in the 56th minute Megan Strijek (Schenectady, NY) took the ball down the left side of the field. Crossing toward the middle of the pitch, she found Anna DeMasi (Colchester, VT), who gathered and shot across the box to the inside of the left post to put Clarkson up 2-0.

Led by freshman goalkeeper Sierra Spring (Saratoga Springs, NY), the backline would not allow a single shot in the second half. Spring recorded two saves and picked up the first win of her career, and the Golden Knights outshot the Raptors 15-3 on the afternoon.

"Our mindset going into the game was completely different," said head coach Sarah Raymond. "We were prepared to hustle and give it our all and play a complete game as a team. That was probably the most dangerous that we've been all year long. We scored two really nice goals and I'm feeling good about what they put out on the field."
