Bradenton, FL - With four goals from Paige Fayette and four points from Christine Wright the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team surprised Stevenson University, a team that has been ranked nationally or receiving votes all season, 12-8 at the Spring Fling in Western Florida.

Prior to Tuesday night's tilt, Stevenson University (4-4) had suffered three losses but all of the games had come against teams ranked highly in the national polls, including two in the top four in the country. However, the Golden Knights joined that list of teams and moved to 4-1 on the season with one of the biggest wins in program history.

Nothing positive occurred in the first six minutes of the game for the Golden Knights, as Stevenson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in just 5:25. Clarkson quickly got its bearings and scored the next six goals, led by Ashley Flick's opening score from Christine Wright at the 21:12 mark. The Knights chipped away at the lead and then took it, keeping the Mustangs off the scoreboard for the next 20-plus minutes. After Fayette rattled off three straight scores with less than 10 minutes to go, the Mustangs scored with 11 seconds to go to briefly halt the momentum of the Knights. Clarkson headed into the break with a 6-4 lead.

In the second half, Wright scored the first goal to give Clarkson a 7-4 edge, but the Mustangs scored twice to stay within striking distance. Stevenson would never complete the comeback, always remaining one goal behind as the Knights had an answer to each score. After a Mustangs score with 12:31 to go made the score 9-8 Clarkson, the Knights shut down Stevenson the rest of the way. Kate Dillon scored on a pass from Wright at 10:15, Taylor Collins scored unassisted at 5:52, and Ashley Flick scored for the third time in the game with 1:52 to go as the Knights finished strong for the fourth straight game.

Fayette produced four goals in the game and Wright added four points on a goal and three assists, also contributing two groundballs and two draws. Flick scored three times and had three groundballs, while Dillon, Collins, Emma Jeffery and Danielle Faivus each scored a goal as well. Collins also had two draw controls and three more groundballs. Dani Tani also scooped up three groundballs, but more importantly she produced eight saves on 16 shots on goal to earn the win.

For Stevenson, Kathryn Merrick scored three goals and five other Mustangs produced a goal apiece. Leanne Bittner made four saves, but allowed 10 goals in 40:48 before being replaced by Maggie Lawder, who stopped three shots and allowed the final two goals in 19:12 of action.

Clarkson finished with an edge of 19-16 in shots on goal, though the Knights trailed 24-22 in shots overall. Clarkson did win the war for groundballs (12-9) and committed two fewer turnovers than Stevenson (11-9).
