Junior captain Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) scored both goals for the third-ranked Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team and classmate Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) posted 16 saves as the Golden Knights earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brown in ECAC Hockey action at Cheel Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson, which defeated Yale 4-1 on Friday, improved its home record to 7-0 and stands at 10-2 overall. The Knights remain perfect in league play with a 4-0 ECAC Hockey mark. The Green and Gold travel to Quinnipiac and Princeton next weekend.

Clarkson had the better of the play against Brown (1-5, 1-5) in the first period, outshooting the Bears by almost a 2-to-1 margin, 13-7. The Knights, however, had to wait until the final minutes of the opening stanza before they could celebrate a goal. With 1:35 remaining in the first, junior Shelby Nisbet (Wiseton, SASK) fired in a shot from the point, which Mercer tipped in for the game’s first goal. Freshman Olivia Howe (Moose Jaw, SASK) also assisted.

Brown tied the game early in the middle stanza on hard shot from the left circle by Sarah Robson at 4:39.

With 5:06 remaining in the second period Clarkson regained the lead when Mercer scored her second of the game and fourth of the season, tapping in a pass in front from senior Danielle Skirrow (Trenton, ONT) for the game-winner. Nisbet recorded her second assists of the afternoon.

Clarkson outshot the Bears 8-5 in the third and 29-17 overall, but could not get another goal past Brown netminder Aubree Moore, who finished with 27 saves. The Knights were 0-of-4 on the power play, while Brown was 0-of-1 with the man-advantage.
