Potsdam, NY – Timely scoring and solid goaltending led the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team by the Dartmouth College Big Green 3-0 on Friday night at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson improves to 8-2-2 (3-1-1 ECAC Hockey) and will play its fourth straight home game tomorrow afternoon when the #8 Harvard Crimson come to Cheel Arena at 4:00 pm. Dartmouth falls to 1-5 (1-4-0 ECAC Hockey) and will travel to take on St. Lawrence tomorrow afternoon.

"Tonight was a pretty gutsy win for us," stated Clarkson co-head coach Matt Desrosiers. "We battled hard and did a lot of the little things well in order to get the win like blocking shots. It was great to see a lot players step up and contribute to the win. We played pretty solid defensively and Erica (Howe) made some saves when we needed them. We are going to need a similar effort tomorrow against a strong Harvard team."

The Golden Knights had a short-handed attempt early in the game as senior Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) and classmate Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) had a two-on-one advantage. Rattray controlled the puck into the attacking zone and passed to Styner, but her shot was saved by Dartmouth goaltender Lindsay Holdcroft.

Rattray had another shorthanded attempt later in the period when she took on three Dartmouth defenders and made a diving effort toward the net, but Holdcroft again stood strong in net.

Clarkson got on the board shortly after, as the puck bounced behind the Dartmouth net and around to sophomore Cayley Mercer (Exeter, ONT). Her shot was deflected wide but she controlled the rebound around the net and took another shot in front. Her shot was saved but freshman Jessica Gillham (Uxbridge, ONT) was there for the rebound and beat Holdcroft on her blocker side for her first career collegiate goal to put the Knights up 1-0.

In a penalty-filled first period, where both teams combined for 16 penalty minutes, Clarkson outshot Dartmouth 10-3 and the Big Green rarely tested senior goaltender Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT).

The Big Green had a scoring chance eight minutes into the second period when they had a two-on-one opportunity, but sophomore defenseman Renata Fast (Burlington, ONT) broke up the pass with her stick to stop the chance.

Clarkson had a 5-on-3 for 47 seconds in the second period, but Dartmouth was able to kill off both penalties to keep it a one score game.

Minutes later, this time on a Clarkson penalty kill, the Golden Knights had a 2-on-1 shorthanded opportunity as sophomore Olivia Howe found senior Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) in front of the net, but Holdcroft again made the save.

Another power play chance late in the second period was unsuccessful for Clarkson, but they attempted four shots and just missed on several rebounds.

Freshman Genevieve Bannon (Candiac, QUE) added a cushion at the 1:14 mark in the third as she beat Holdcroft to put Clarkson up 2-0. Fast dumped the puck into the corner and found Rattray, who passed to the middle and found Bannon open for the goal.

Another shorthanded attempt by the Knights was stopped five minutes into the period as Styner took a point-blank shot that was gloved by Holdcroft to keep the game 2-0. She would add another diving glove save later in the third on another power play opportunity for the Green and Gold.

Rattray would add an empty net goal from just over the blue line to put the game away for the 3-0 victory.

Howe stopped all 11 shots she faced to record her second straight shutout and fourth on the season.

In all, the teams committed seven penalties each, but neither team was able to cash in with the extra skater. Clarkson did not all Dartmouth to attempt a shot with the man advantage. The Knights outshot Dartmouth 34-11 on the evening.
