Knights women's basketball offense off track against Union

Schenectady, NY - The most efficient offense in the Liberty League entering the weekend, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team couldn't get going on Friday night, falling to Union College 72-55 in conference action.

The Golden Knights saw their four-game winning streak come to a halt with the loss, falling to 16-6 overall and 9-4 in league games, while Union got back into the playoff race, moving to 14-8 and 8-5.

Everything seemed okay for Clarkson in the very early going, up 4-2 just 90 secoonds into the game, but Clarkson would get just two more baskets in the next nine minutes and found itself down by double figures midway through the period. Though a Madison Shea basket at 9:30 would end an 11-0 run by the Dutchwomen, it wouldn't stop the Knights' struggles. Eventually, Clarkson trailed by as many as 24 in the first half before finally settling for a 22-point deficit at the break. Clarkson shot just 7-for-26 in the first half and committed 10 turnovers.

A Devin Sorell 3-pointer at the 16:31 mark of the second period got Clarkson back to within 18 points (44-26), it didn't serve for much of a reprieve. Union pushed its advantage back out to a game-high 25 points (57-32) at the 10:19 mark. Clarkson finally found a little bit of offense to cut away the deficit, pulling to within 13 (60-47) by the 4:53 mark, but the Dutchwomen had enough of a bulge that it was able to hold off the Knights for the rest of the game.

Cara Manfredi finished with a team-best 16 points, but shot just 3-for-20 from the field and missed all nine of her 3-point attempts, scoring the majority of her points from the free throw line (10-for-12). Alyssia Marsal did her best to score 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting, but the rest of the team made only 13 of its 54 attempts from the floor and shot only 1-for-17 from beyond the 3-point line all together. Clarkson did make up for its deficiencies with an 18-for-22 effort from the free throw line.

For Union, Cailin Schmeer led all scorers with 21 points, going 5-for-10 from the floor and 11-for-18 from the line, while Amy Fisher came off the bench to score 16 points on 7-for-15 shooting. Kate Thompson had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Natalie Leone tossed in 11 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists.
