Knights women's basketball late rally falls short at Union

Schenectady, NY - Behind by just three in the final minute, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team saw its opponent, Union College, make seven free throws in the last 30 seconds to hold off the Golden Knights late charge, 60-51, in Liberty League action Friday evening.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League, while Union picked up its first conference win to move to 1-3 in the Liberty League and 8-4 overall. Clarkson will face Rensselaer at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

Clarkson came out hot, making four of its first five shots in the opening four minutes, but the Knights missed their next three shots and turned the ball over six times before making another field goal, a 3-pointer by Melissa Bogart (Voorheesville, NY). Despite the struggle, that shot gave Clarkson an 11-8 advantage and the Knights still held a one-point lead with less than eight minutes to go. However, another scoreless drought (0-for-8) over the final five minutes allowed Union to take the lead. Fortunately for the Knights, Union wasn't much better and held just a three point lead at the half.

In the second half, the Dutchwomen pushed their advantage to as many as nine points in the early going, but timely makes often had Clarkson back within striking distance. Clarkson was down by nine points at the 12:31 mark, but scored seven straight in the next three minutes to climb back within two. Union quickly rallied back as well, and it wasn't until the final minute that Clarkson was able to once again make it a one-possesion game, pulling to within three (53-50) with 32 seconds to go. The Dutchwomen wouldn't let the Knights have any last second chances, though, making seven of their eight free throw attempts in the final 28 seconds to keep the Green and Gold at bay.

Ashley Loggins (Albany, NY) scored a team-best 15 points, shooting 7-for-15 from the floor, to go along with eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block, while Melissa Bogart added in 10 points and a pair of steals. Cara Manfredi (Glastonbury, CT) added in 14 points, with all of them coming in the second period as she recovered from a slow first half. Brittney Kenney led Union with 15 points, going 6-for-10 from the floor, and Cailin Schmeer added in 14 points, shooting 12-for-15 from the free throw line.
