Chestnut Hill, MA - Despite two power-play opportunities in the final five minutes of regulation, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team was unable to force extra-time, dropping a 3-2 decision to fourth-ranked Boston College Friday afternoon.
The Golden Knights, who were receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com poll, fell to 12-6-4 on the season, while Boston College improved to 14-6-1. Clarkson will return to New England next weekend when it restarts the ECAC Hockey schedule against Yale and Brown.
Clarkson took advantage of Boston College penalties in the first period to jump out to a 2-0 lead on the road. A pair of simultaneous penalties on the Eagles created a 5-on-3 opportunity for the Knights, and just 11 seconds into the two-skater advantage Clarkson was able to convert. Junior defenseman Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) scored her second goal of the season at 10:08, with assists going to Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) and Danielle Skirrow (Trenton, ONT). Just a moment later, Boston College was whistled for another penalty, causing another 5-on-3 for Clarkson, and once again the Knights were able to capitalize on the opportunity. Senior Gabrielle Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) picked up her fifth goal of the season, this time with Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) and Katelyn Ptolemy (Dinsmore, SASK) earning assists on the goal at 11:51.
Though Clarkson owned shot advantages in each of the three periods, its scoring would end after the two power-play chances midway through the second period. Boston College, however, would take advantage of its limited shots, scoring early in the second period and then again late with a power-play goal.
In the third period, with the two teams skating 4-on-4, the Eagles' Dru Burns recorded her second goal of the season for what would turn out to be the game-winner. Clarkson enjoyed three more power-play chances in the final fifteen minutes, including one with five minutes remaining and another in the last three minutes, but Boston College was able to keep the puck out of the net and earn its 14th victory of the year.
Clarkson held an overwhelming 34-18 edge in shots, highlighted by a 16-6 advantage in the final 20 minutes. Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) made 15 saves for Clarkson, and Corinne Boyles stopped 32 shots for the Eagles. Clarkson went 2-for-8 on the power play and Boston College scored once in five extra-skater chances.
