Knights win in overtime for third straight women's lax victory

Senior Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY) recorded her 200th career point with the winning goal 2:00 minutes into the final overtime to lift the Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team to a 13-12 victory on the road in Liberty League action at the University of Rochester on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, who won their third straight game, improved their record to 11-4 overall and to 4-4 in the Liberty League. Clarkson closes out the regular season on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. conference game at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Freshman Christine Wright (Watertown, NY) recorded a game-high seven points, including five goals, to pace the Green and Gold. VanDeValk chipped in three goals, while senior Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY) added two goals and three assists. Senior Marissa Mastronardi Cortland, NY) scored two goals and two assists. Senior Kerrie Cline (Tuxedo, NY) rounded out the Clarkson goal scorers with one tally.

After surrendering the opening goal, Clarkson jumped out to a 4-1 lead 10 minutes into the contest. The University of Rochester (2-12, 1-7) answered back with four consecutive goals to hold a 5-4 lead after the opening 30 minutes.

The Knights tallied six of the first eight goals in the second half to hold a 10-7 advantage with 4:13 remaining in regulation.

The Yellowjackets answered back with three goals to tie the game 10-10 through 60 minutes. The home team held leads of 11-10 and 12-11 at the start of extra play, but the Knights battled back with Wright and VanDeValk scoring the final two goals to put Clarkson on top.

The Knights held a slim 27-26 edge in shots and controlled ground balls 21-15.

Junior Kara DiNatale (Auburn, NH) made 10 saves in the Clarkson net. With less than 10 seconds to play in regulation, DiNatale made a point-blank stop of a UR shot from seven yards out and scooped up the ground ball to give the Green and Gold the opportunity to win the game in overtime.

Wright and senior Noelle Miller (Hamburg, NY) picked up a game-high four ground balls each for the Knights.

Sarah Skinner and Stephanie Ortell scored three goals each to lead the Yellowjackets.
