Knights volleyball win two on second day of Colorado Classic

Colorado Springs, CO - Junior Victoria Kirkemo (Englewood, CO) struck for 32 kills and seven aces as the Clarkson University Volleyball team swept its day two matches at the Colorado College Classic on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-2 on the season, sweeping East Texas Baptist University in three (25-20, 25-11, 25-16) and then beating Saint Mary's (MN) in four sets (25-14, 25-23, 17-25, 25-20).

Against ETBU, the Knights hit .322 in the match, improving in the second set and then doing even better in the third. Kirkemo led the team with 13 kills and four aces in the match, but both Aishvina Arasu (Brea, CA) and Adrienne Walker (Centennial, CO) each had better hitting percentages. Arasu produced 10 kills with only one error in 16 swings for a .562 rate and Walker struck at a .421 clip with 10 kills and just two miscues in 19 attempts. Walker also made four blocks, including three solo efforts. Kirstie Shurie (LaCanada, CA) had three kills in only four attempts and contributed 29 assists and seven digs, while Evanne Jimenez (Ventura, CA) tossed in 10 digs. For ETBU, Danielle Miller had eight kills and Kayle Green had 11 assists.

Versus Saint Mary's, Clarkson won the first two sets, but the Cardinals made it a match by taking the third. The Knights then used a mini-run midway through the fourth set to create a seven-point advantage and the team was able to cruise from there to finish things off in four sets. Kirkemo stepped up her effort with 19 kills, three aces, and 13 digs, while Arasu and Walker contributed 12 kills and 10 kills, respectively. Shurie ran the offense for 46 assists and also had eight digs and a pair of aces, while Rachael Aird (East Syracuse, NY) had six kills and five blocks. Defensively, Jimenez had 23 digs and Hannah Jones (Arrowhead, CA) came through with 13 digs. Saint Mary's was led by Cassidy Bittle with 16 kills and Molly Grover added in 11 kills. Tayler MacVey had a double-double with 21 assists and 14 digs and Lex Krogstad produced 20 digs. Mary Norick and Molly Urban combined for 13 total blocks for the Cardinals.
