Knights volleyball team down Potsdam State in three straight

Potsdam, NY - Senior setter Lani Durio (Austin, TX) had 38 assists and classmate Erika Chin (Katy, TX) produced 19 digs and four aces, including two late in the third set to clinch the win, as the Clarkson University Volleyball team picked up a three-set victory over Potsdam State 25-10, 25-11, 25-20 Wednesday night at Maxcy Hall.

The Golden Knights, ranked 23rd in the country, improved to 3-2 overall, while Potsdam fell to 2-3. Clarkson will return to Maxcy Hall this weekend to compete in the Victory Promotions Invitational.

Clarkson dominated in the early going, scoring 21 of the first 28 points of the match and was able to cruise to wins in the first two sets, but struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the third. It wasn't until late in the set, trailing by two (20-18), that Clarkson found a different gear. Tied at 20-20, Erika Chin had two straight aces and Adrienne Walker (Centennial, CO) followed with a kill. Block assists picked up the 24th point and then another kill by Walker completed a seven-point run by the Knights to close out the match.

"Any win against Potsdam is a great win," head coach Johan Dulfer said, "but I thought today we really tried to make a statement. I thought the difference in the match was clearly the serve-pass battle. They were out of system so much that it put them on their heels the entire match. On our side, our passing allowed us to spread our offense almost evenly over five hitters. While it's hard to stay completely focused for a complete three-set match, I thought we maintained a high intensity level for most of the match and I'm very proud of our ability to do that this early in the year.

Walker finished with 12 kills and just one error in 19 attempts (.579 hitting percentage) and also added an ace, four digs, and four total blocks. Victoria Kirkemo (Englewood, CO) added in 11 kills, including five in each of the first two sets.
