Elmira, NY - Swinging at a .348 clip through three sets, the Clarkson University Volleyball team swept a three-set match from Mount Aloysius Saturday afternoon at the Elmira Invitational, winning 25-13, 25-21, 25-11, to finish 2-0 on the weekend.
The Golden Knights moved to 19-4 overall and have only one loss in their last 15 matches. Clarkson returns to Liberty League play on Tuesday and looks to lock up a spot in the conference tournament when it travels to play at St. Lawrence.
Though they never truly faltered, the Golden Knights dominated offensively in the first set with a .444. hitting percentage, and followed that up with an errorless thrid set with 15 kills on 41 swings to take the clean sweep. Freshman Victoria Kirkemo (Englewood, CO) swung at a .615 clip (18 kills-2 errors-26 attempts) and added in 10 digs, while classmate Aishvina Arasu (Brea, CA) added 11 kills with only one error in 30 swings. Sophomore Adrienne Walker (Centennial, CO) surpassed the percentage of Kirkemo with a .636 percentage on eight kills and one error in 11 swings. Freshman Kirstie Shurie (LaCanada, CA) ran the offense for the third straight match and recorded 40 assists (13.3 per set) while Erika Chin (Katy, TX) continued to impress defensively with 18 digs (6.0 per set).
"This weekend turned out to be a great preparation for the week ahead," coach Johan Dulfer remarked. "I thought we were disciplined on defense and creative on offense in both matches."
Following Clarkson's match against St. Lawrence on Tuesday, the Golden Knights will finish off the Liberty League regular season next weekend, taking on RIT at St. Lawrence on Friday and then battling Union and Skidmore at home on Saturday. The match up against Skidmore could very well prove to be the deciding match in regards to which team will host the conference championship tournament.
