The Knights fell behind in by three points early on in the opening set, but the offense began to click early with kills from Aishvina Arasu (Brea, CA), Victoria Kirkemo (Englewood, CO) and Lauren Hutchinson (Spring, TX), scoring 10 of 12 points to alter the momentum of the set. Clarkson hit .300 in the opening set, and held Tufts to just a .037 clip, with Arasu striking for six kills and Hutchinson contributing three.
In the second set, again the Knights fell behind early, but at the same point Clarkson found its offensive firepower, with kills from the usual suspects. However, the Knights found themselves up by just a single point (16-15) midway through the set before another run gave them a six-point edge, capped off by a Hannah Jones (Lake Arrowhead, CA) ace to make the score 23-17. A service error by the Jumbos helped the Knights close out the second set.
Though Clarkson took some time to find the offense necessary in the third set, it turned a six-point deficit (18-12) late into a tie (19-19) just a few points later. Although the score was tied 22-22, Tufts earned the final three points to make Clarkson work an extra set. In the fourth, the score was tied at 19-19, but a Kirkemo kill gave the Knights a lead they would never relinquish. Up by just two (22-20), Adrienne Walker (Centennial, CO) pounded home two kills and Arasu emphatically ended the match with her 24th kill of the match.
"Today is a really proud day," head coach Johan Dulfer remarked. "I thought that Tufts was much improved and excellent in every way. We knew we had to play at a high level to get a good result today and it was great to see the team effort we came up with. We know all too well that it doesn't stop here. We are excited to move on and get ready for another test tomorrow."
Arasu had 52 swings, but struck for 24 kills in those opportunities, hitting .250 along the way. Kirkemo delivered 11 kills and added three aces and nine digs. Walker and Hutchinson each delivered seven kills and Danielle Farabee (Katy, TX) recorded three blocks. Jones finished with three aces, and Kirstie Shurie (LaCanada, CA) ran the offense to the tune of 46 assists, adding in 15 digs. Evanne Jimenez (Ventura, CA) also produced 22 digs.
