Knights take two on Sunday from RIT

Rochester, NY – Under miserable conditions, the Clarkson University Baseball team made sure it came away with a split over the weekend, sweeping the Rochester Institute of Technology with a walk-off victory in game one, 4-3, and a lopsided 9-1 victory in game two Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights slipped back above .500 for the season, moving to 15-14 overall and are now 9-11 in conference games with eight scheduled games left to play. RIT dropped to 12-19 and 7-13.

RIT scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, but Clarkson tallied three in the bottom of the third to take the lead. Three straight hits loaded the bases, and after a fielder’s choice kept the Knights scoreless with an out at the plate, David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) singled to right to score two and Dan Padrazo (Setaucket, NY) lifted a sacrifice fly to score another. The Tigers scored two more unearned runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, but Clarkson enjoyed a walk-off victory when David Wixted singled home John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) for his third RBI of the game.

David Kinney (Mexico, NY) picked up the win for the Knights, pitching his fifth complete game of the season, allowing six hits and no earned runs through seven frames. He also was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Coleman and Wixted also each delivered a pair of hits.

The second game was not as precarious as the first, as RIT scored one in the first, but Clarkson quickly tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, took the lead in the second, and blew the game open in the fifth with a five-run frame. Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) shut down the Tigers offense, allowing only six hits through eight innings with whiffing six. Clarkson’s offense opened up with 12 hits, including a 3-for-5 performance from Kinney, and two-hit performances from Scott Morrissey (Troy, NY) and Tim Beninati (Scoharie, NY). The key blow for Clarkson in the fifth was Justin Rebhun’s (East Greenbush, NY) three-run double.
