Webster, NY - Mike Rowe (Glenville, NY) and Stephen Maxwell (Latham, NY) each gained points in the 100 backstroke as the Clarkson University Swimming team enjoyed its best day thus far at the UNYSCSA Championships Friday at the Webster Aquatic Center.

The Golden Knights’ men stand in 12th place with 174 points through three days of competition, while the women are in 14th with 115 points. The UNYSCSA Championships will conclude on Saturday.

The day began with the 200 butterfly with freshman Kelly Mulvehill (Penfield, NY) making the finals for the Golden Knights, placing 24th in the event, the same spot that she gained in the preliminaries. Mulvehill finished in 2:33.20, slower than her preliminary time, but still eight seconds faster than her seed time. Classmates Emily Dreisbach (Charlton, NY0 and Jaclyn Yeaton (Merrimack, NH) also were just outside of the finals, taking 25th and 26th place, respectively.

Sean Parnett (Clifton Park, NY) and Nate Menapace (Baldwinsville, NY) nearly mirrored Dreisbach and Yeaton in the men’s 200 butterfly. Neither made it to the finals, but both performed well, coming in 26th and 29th place, respectively, with Menapace besting his seed time by 12 seconds.

Clarkson’s men would get on the scoreboard in the 100 backstroke as both Rowe and Maxwell scored for the Knights. Rowe took 15th in the event with a time of 54.29 seconds, and Maxwell came in 22nd in one of the other heats in 56.16. Aaron Cubells (Hamden, CT) and Liam Sharkey (Malta, NY) also raced in the event, but placed 32nd and 35th, respectively, in the preliminaries. On the women’s side in the 100 backstroke, Caitlyn Joyce (Walden, NY) was the top finisher by taking the 40th spot, while Kelsey Jones (Kattskill Bay, NY), Alexandra Pesold (Massena, NY) and Katrina Smith (Ballston Spa, NY) were among the next 10 finishers.

In the 100 breaststroke, Chris Plummer (Spencerport, NY) was one spot out of the finals with a time of 1:03.07, which was still four seconds faster than his seed time. Aaron Parysek (Spencerport, NY) and Michael Mahoney (Andover, NY) came in 36th and 38th, respectively, for the men. Freshman Kelly Ludeke (Burnt Hills, NY) was in the same spot as Plummer, just missing the finals with a 27th-place showing in 1:12.73. Lindsey Borakove (New York, NY) was two spots behind Ludeke in the event, while Anne Hawn (Gouverneur, NY) came in 35th and Lauren Malone (Plattsburgh, NY) took 43rd.

Both teams earned points in the 800 freestyle races, with a pair of men’s teams gaining tallies. Sean Parnett, Nick Hens (Liverpool, NY), Raymond Bailey (Galway, NY), and Mike Rowe led Clarkson’s eighth-place team in 7:20.39, while Mike Tarsel (Baldwinsville, NY), Nick Clemens (Lowville, NY), Paul Kreppel (Clarence, NY) and Tyler Nichols (Spencerport, NY) scored points as the 24th-place squad. For the women, Emma Bonan (Queensbury, NY), Jillian Brown (Kenmore, NY), Mulvehill and Ludeke scored in 13th-place in 8:27.36, while the four-swimmer team of Deonna Coleman (Derby, NY), Colleen Daly (Manlius, NY), Courtney Karszes (Stanley, NY), and Dreisbach finished out of the scoring, taking the 28th spot.
