Troy, NY – Only 20 hits were struck between the Clarkson University Baseball team and Rensselaer in 16 innings worth of action as the two teams each won a game in Saturday's doubleheader thanks to standout pitching performances.

Clarkson won the opener, 4-2, as junior Ryan Riley twirled a two-hitter, while Rensselaer took game two, 3-0, on a complete-game effort from Christopher Palmiero. The Golden Knights (12-14, 7-9 Liberty League) and Engineers (16-17, 9-8) are scheduled to play a second doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

Though Riley tossed a game in the game one, RPI was able to tough the righty for two runs in the second without the ball leaving the infield. The Engineers got two straight infield singles and loaded the bases with a walk. Richard Drum then drove in a run the hard way, getting hit by a pitch to force Christian Spagnuola around. Jack Vaccari then scored Rensselaer's second run on a double play.

Clarkson but the margin to one in the top of the fourth as Mike Krick singled home Vincent Granuzzo. Three runs came across in the top of the fifth for the Knights as Clarkson loaded the bases with hits from Joe Stockman and Mike Tito and a hit by pitch for Will Coleman. Brad Pearson then drove in Stockman on an error and Tito was able to score on the play as well. Granuzzo followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Will Coleman. RPI would not threaten Clarkson's lead for the rest of the game as Riley retired the final nine hitters of the game.

Riley finished with five strikeouts in seven innings, giving up just two hits and two walks. Ryan Yerby took the loss in relief for Rensselaer.

The Engineers returned the favor with a dominant pitching effort of their own. Christopher Palmiero allowed just six hits and a walk while whiffing eight in nine scoreless frames. Clarkson put runners on second base in the second, third, eighth, and ninth innings, but that was as far as any Golden Knight would advance around the bases.

RPI scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first when Ethann Meister hit a two-run homer to left. A bases loaded ground out by Jack Vaccari drove in a third run for the Engineers.

Rory Corcoran took the loss for Clarkson, going 4.2 innings. Ethan Kornbrek and Mark Connor combined to give up just one hit over the final 3.1 innings.
