Potsdam, NY – Senior Al Catano (Ronkonkoma, NY) and junior Nick Short (Endwell, NY) each won a pair of individual events as the Clarkson University Swim team split its third dual meet in as many weeks, this time swapping wins with St. Michael's on Saturday at Fuller Pool.
The Golden Knights' men came away with a 132-99 victory, while the women fell to the Purple Knights 124-101. Clarkson will stay home next weekend when it competes at the North Country Invitational.
Catano won the 200 freestyle (2:04.28) and 100 backstroke (1:00.34) and Short won back-to-back events in the 200 individual medley (2:21.93) and 100 butterfly (1:03.26). Jon Ketcham (East Aurora, NY) claimed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.78) and Sam Zwierzchowski (East Amherst, NY) beat out several others to win the 800 freestyle (9:50.83). The Knights also won both of the relay events on the day, taking first in the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:08.77 thanks to Catano, Ketcham, Short, and Chris Bay (Greene, NY). Although the second event was swam as an exhibition for the Knights, Nikos Moisidis (Watervliet, NY), James Baldwin (Incline Village, NV), Ray Bailey (Galway, NY) and Alex Trass (Greene, NY) had the top time in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:04.39.
Clarkson's Joanne Bechaz (Clayton, NY) enjoyed the top spot in both of the 1-meter diving events, scoring 150.90 and 120.85. Abigail Sullivan (Canandaigua, NY) also won the 100 freestyle (1:03.16) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.67) as a multiple event winner. Freshman Tiffany Catano (Ronkonkoma, NY) had the best finish in the 200 freestyle (2:21.34) and Kelly Ludeke (Burnt Hills, NY) was first in the 400 freestyle (5:02.23). Deonna Coleman (Derby, NY), Bechaz, Kelly Mulvehill (Penfield, NY) and Sarah Halstead (Milford, NH) also took top honors in the 400 freestyle.
