Knights softball swept against Union in Liberty League opener

Albany, NY - On a cold day that normally would have squashed offense, the Clarkson University Softball team's bats were fairly quiet against Union College in its opening games against a Liberty League opponent as the Golden Knights were shutout twice, 6-0 and 14-0, on Saturday afternoon at Saint Rose's Cathy Cumming Haker Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 0-14 on the season and 0-2 in the Liberty League after going two weeks without playing a game due to poor conditions in the Northeast. Union moved to 7-7 overall and 2-0 in conference games.

Clarkson freshman pitcher Jamie Bridge (Plymouth, CT) struck out 10 over seven innings for the Knights, but the Dutchwomen got to Bridge in the third inning by utilizing a two-out walk. Union pitcher Alyssa Wolejko worked a walk and then was sent home on a double to straight-away centerfield by Allyson Staats. Joanna Chalifoux then hit a blooper to shallow right to plate Staats to give Union a 2-0 lead. The Dutchwomen tacked on an unearned run in the fourth on a two-out single by Wolejko and then plated three more in the top of the seventh on a bases-clearing double by Lindsay Cohen.

Wolejko was dominant, holding the Knights without a hit until two outs in the bottom of the seventh when Bridge laced a double over the head of centerfielder Camille Corbin. However, Bridge was only the fourth baserunner of the day for the Knights and Clarkson finished trailing by six runs. After retiring the leadoff hitter on a groundout off a bunt, Wolejko struck out 10 straight hitters and finished with 16 whiffs.

In game two, Union scored three in the first, two in the second, two more in the third, and then put the game out of reach in the fourth with a seven-run effort. Clarkson struck for two hits in the second game, with Bridge again starting things off with a single in the fourth and Alycia Short (Norfolk, NY) legged out an infield single on a single between the shortstop and third baseman in the fifth. For the Dutchwomen, the top three hitters in the order, Dani Hennel, Aimee Palleschi and Alyssa Woljeko, went a combined 6-for-10 with seven runs scored and eight driven in.
