Knights softball extends win streak to six before falling in nightcap to Union

Schenectady, NY – A come-from-behind win in the opener looked like it would provide the Clarkson University Softball team some momentum for game two, but the Golden Knights would have to settle for their second Liberty League split on Thursday against Union, winning game one 5-4 and dropping game two 6-0.

The Golden Knights saw their record move to 16-5 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League, while Union maintained its even record in the league at 3-3 and pushed its overall mark to 8-13 on the season. Clarkson will return home for a pair of conference doubleheaders this weekend against the University of Rochester and RIT.

Union struck first in the opener with a two-out single by Dani Hennel, but the Golden Knights tied the game up in the top of the fourth when the bottom of the lineup came through with a two-out rally of its own. Katie Scott walked and was pushed to second on a Katelin Ferguson single and Bridget Woolley delivered a single to knot the game up 1-1. It appeared as if a three-run shot in the bottom of the sixth would prove to be the difference as Camille Corbin homered to left field off Clarkson pitcher Jamie Bridge, a three-run shot that gave the Dutchwomen a solid cushion. However, Bridge started the top of the seventh with a single and stole second, allowing Raeanna Dunn to single her home for the team's second run. Summer Lancette then doubled down the left field line to plate Dunn and Chelsea Elliott sent Lancette home with a single to center to quickly tie the score at 4-4. After Elliott moved up on a fly out, Erika Jensen singled to right for what would prove to be the game-winning RBI. Bridge then struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

Ferguson finished the game 3-for-4 while Dunn and Lancette each had two hits, a run scored and drove home a run. Bridge allowed four earned runs in the game, but allowed just two hits and uncharacteristically walked four after walking just seven in her first 63 innings. The sophomore hurler also whiffed 12 in her ninth win of the year.

In game two, Union found its offensive groove early, scoring two in the first, one in the second and two more in the third to put the Knights in an early hole. Unfortunately for Clarkson, there was no offensive spark for the second game as the team could muster just four hits against Union pitcher Allyson Staats, who tossed her second complete game of the year. In the process, she long hitting streaks by Raeanna Dunn (17 games) and Chelsea Elliott (14 games) came to an end. Staats gained her fourth shutout of the year, while Katie Pelton was saddled with the loss, giving up five earned runs in three innings. Bridge came on in relief and allowed one earned run over the final three innings.
