Potsdam, NY - After an impressive second half in Tuesday saw the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team pull away for a victory, the Golden Knights collective shooting stroke failed them in the early going, and the team was unable to come back from a double-digit halftime deficit as Elmira gained a 62-46 win Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-4 overall on the season and the team will return to action early next week when it hosts Cazenovia College. Elmira pushed above .500, improving to 3-2 overall.

Elmira jumped out to an early lead as Clarkson struggled to make many shots in the early going. Sophomore point guard Leighann Tomita (Cerritos, CA) was a spark plug for the Knights, getting into the lane to get free throw opportunities and layups, but the Soaring Eagles' Maria Thannhauser seemed to have an answer for every Clarkson basket, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor for a team-best 11 points at the half. Clarkson was back to within a couple of possessions, but the Elmira offense was able to cut through the Knights' defense and pushed to a 16-point halftime edge.

In the second half, the Golden Knights tried to get back into the contest, but their misses were always corralled by Elmira, minimizing second chance opportunities. The Soaring Eagles enjoyed a 41-32 edge on the boards overall and had 12 offensive rebounds to Clarkson's six. Thannhauser continued to hit her shots as well, burying her first four shots of the second half en route to a game-high 21 points. Clarkson rallied slightly late thanks to freshman Ashley Loggins (Albany, NY), who scored 15 of her team-high 19 points in the second half. However, the Knights couldn't hit enough shots down the stretch to force a situation where they could try to get back into the contest via the free throw line, and eventually fell by 16, the same margin as at the half.

Tomita scored 15 points, going 8-for-10 from the free throw line, and added in five rebounds and four assists. Brooke Butkovsky (Monroe, CT) was held to just four points, but made five steals on the defensive end for the Knights.

For Elmira, Thannhauser finished with a game-high 21 points while classmate Jessica Zoltowski tossed in 17 points, and each player added in a team-high five rebounds.
