Springfield, MA – After winning 16 straight matches, including eight straight Liberty League games, the Clarkson University Volleyball team suffered its first loss since early September on Friday night when the Golden Knights dropped a three-set decision to Springfield College.
The Golden Knights, ranked 11th in the latest AVCA poll, fell to 20-3 overall while Springfield moved to 13-4. Clarkson will face Williams College and Westfield State on Saturday.
Each of the three sets was fiercely contested as two were decided by just two points and the third by only three (25-23, 26-24, 25-22).
"We need to learn that 100 percent effort and purpose is needed to get wins against good teams like Springfield," head coach Johan Dulfer said. "Our excuses are plenty but none of them matter. We had enough chances to win this match and didn't push hard enough. It's a good lesson to learn at a time like this. I can't wait to see how we translate it to two more important matches tomorrow."
Senior Adrienne Walker (Centennial, CO) had four kills to become the third Clarkson player this season, and tenth overall, to surpass 1000-career kills. Victoria Kirkemo (Englewood, CO) led the team with 11 kills while Rachael Aird (East Syracuse, NY) had the best hitting percentage with six kills and a pair of errors in 14 swings (.286). Lauren Hutchinson (Spring, TX) produced 23 assists, five aces, and eight digs along with a pair of block assists, and Evanne Jimenez (Ventura, CA) had a team-best 15 digs.
