Freshman Matthew Gold (Pittsford, NY) scored a game-high three goals to lead the Clarkson University Lacrosse team offensively in a 10-7 victory over Plattsburgh State in non-league action at Hantz Turf Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, who snapped a two-game losing skid, got off to a quick start against Plattsburgh (6-3) with a pair of man-up goals by junior Kyle Kasprzyk (Orchard Park, NY) and freshman Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) nine seconds apart to take a 2-0 lead with 9:45 remaining in the first quarter. Junior Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) and Gold also scored in the opening frame as the Green and Gold took a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes.

Clarkson built its lead to 6-3 at the break with Gold scoring his third of the game with just five seconds left in the half.

The Knights and Cardinals traded three goals apiece in the third quarter and tallied one each over the final 15 minutes. Plattsburgh made it a two-goal game at 8-6 with Charlie Dullea’s goal with 2:52 left in the third, but sophomore Peter Goss (Jamesville, NY) scored his first career goal with two seconds remaining in the quarter to put Clarkson back on top by three, at 9-6 through 45 minutes.

Kasprzyk (2-1) and McCabe (1-2) also recorded three points in the victory. Senior Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA), junior Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) and freshman Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) rounded out the Clarkson goal scorers.

Behind a strong defensive effort, junior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) made eight saves in the Clarkson goal as the Knights, who had nine extra-man opportunities, outshot Plattsburgh 41-28. Clarkson held a 28-19 advantage in ground balls. Sophomore Jack Keenan (Brasher Falls, NY) picked up a game-high six ground balls. Senior defenseman Matt Davidson (Hilton, NY) had a solid game defensively, recording four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Tommy Kilderry led Plattsburgh with two goals.

At 5-2 overall and 0-1 in Liberty League play, the Knights return to conference action when they host Rensselaer in a 1:00 p.m. game at Hantz Field on Saturday.
