Knights men's swim team split second dual meet of season at Oswego

Oswego, NY - For the first time in over a decade, the Clarkson University Women's Swim team was able to pick up a victory against Oswego State, taking the Lakers down 146-138, while the men dropped a 160-131 decision Saturday afternoon.

While the win for the women was a complete team effort, the difference on Saturday proved to be diver Joanne Bechaz (Clayton, NY), who won both the 1-meter dive and 3-meter dive. In years past without a diver on the roster, Clarkson would have fallen by double-digits, but the even events allowed the Knights to come away with the victory.

Freshman Abigail Sullivan (Canandaigua, NY) won three individual events and was the second leg of the winning 200 medley relay for the women on Saturday, earning top honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.59), 100 freestyle (56.97), and 200 breaststroke (2:34.77). Her win in the 100 breaststroke was by more than seven seconds, and her victory in the 200 breaststroke saw a gap of well over 13 seconds. Classmate Tiffany Catano (Ronkonkoma, NY) nearly matched Sullivan's performance, taking the top spot in the 200 backstroke (2:20.06) and 200 individual medley (2:27.52), and narrowly missing the trifecta in the 100 backstroke, where she came up six-hundredths of a second short in second place. Kelly Ludeke (Burnt Hills, NY) won a pair of freestyle events, finishing first in the 200 freestyle (2:09.24) and 500 freestyle (5:42.11). Both Catano and Ludeke were also on the winning 200 medley relay (1:58.28) with Sullivan, as was freshman Kayla Weckesser (Rhinebeck, NY).

The men won both of the freestyle relays, with Al Catano (Ronkonkoma, NY), Jon Ketcham (East Aurora, NY), Nick Short (Endwell, NY) and Chris Bay (Greene, NY) combining for a 1:41.19 finish, while Travis Derr (Lakeville, CT), John Cain (Rochester, NY), Bakari Smith (Rochester, NY) and Kyle Atkinson (Baldwinsville, NY) each did their part in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.23. Catano also won three freestyle events, taking first in the 50 freestyle (22.41), 200 freestyle (1:49.13) and 500 freestyle (5:06.43). Sophomore Tyler Nichols (Spencerport, NY) won both the 200 backstroke (2:06.54) and 200 individual medley (2:09.62). Ketcham also claimed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.83).
