Potsdam, NY - An early goal set the tone as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team fell to the #12 University of Rochester Yellow Jackets 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.
The Golden Knights will host SUNYIT Wednesday night at 7:30 at Hantz Turf Field while Rochester travels to take on Hobart College next Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets came out quickly, pressuring the Clarkson defense from the start. Rochester took a corner kick three minutes into the game that bounced around in front of the Clarkson net. Two shots were turned away by defenders before Keith Grafmeyer handled a rebound and beat Clarkson goalkeeper Alex White (Unadilla, NY) to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
Rochester continued applying pressure in the 20th minute on a bizarre play in which Jeffrey Fafinski took a corner kick and put it on net. White came out to field the ball, caught it, and appeared to be pushed into the net by a group of players in front of the goal. It was determined that White entered the net on his own power so Fafinski was credited with the goal to give Rochester a 2-0 lead.
Less than a minute later Rochester put some distance between the teams when Alex Swanger took a pass from Shane Dobles and beat the keeper from 20 yards out. Rochester would add a fourth goal late in the first half and three more in the second half for the 7-0 win. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Golden Knights 19-3 in the first half and 26-5 on the afternoon. Rochester took 12 more corner kicks than Clarkson.
