Knights' Kinney breaks HR record in split against Rochester

Potsdam, NY - Senior David Kinney's (Mexico, NY) record-breaking home run couldn't have come at a better time for the Clarkson University Baseball team, as his three-run homer in the seventh tied game two to help the Golden Knights earn a split against the University of Rochester Saturday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium.

A walk-off single from Rob Barnard over a drawn-in in field and outfield lifted Rochester to a 3-2 victory in the opener, while Kinney's home run in the nightcap sparked a six-run rally for a 8-7 win in game two. Clarkson moved to 13-12 overall and 7-9 in conference games, while Rochester moved to 7-17 and 4-11. Clarkson travels to play RIT next weekend.

Clarkson scored one in the top of the first inning in game one as John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) started with a walk and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Kinney stroked a single to center to drive in the run and then held the Yellowjackets scoreless through the first four innings. Clarkson added another run in the top of the fifth on a double from Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY). Rochester broke through with a pair in the fifth on a bases loaded hit by pitch by Alex Caghan and then a sacrifice fly from Barnard.

In the seventh inning, Rochester loaded the bases on a pair of hit by pitches and an intentional walk and with a drawn-in infield and outfield, Barnard hit a fly ball to center field which normally would have been caught, but was plenty deep enough to have driven in the run as a sacrifice fly had it been caught anyway.

Kinney was the hard-luck pitcher for Clarkson, losing on a walk-off for the second time this season after pitching more than well enough to win. He allowed just four hits and two walks over six-plus innings while striking out five. Adam Sullivan gained the victory in relief, pitching two scoreless frames with just one walk and three strikeouts. Kinney went 2-for-2 for Clarkson, while Barnard had two RBIs.

Each team scored a run in the first of game two with Justin Rebhun (East Greenbush, NY) sending one home on a sacrifice fly to center for Clarkson and Nick Carlson doubling in Alex Caghan for Rochester. The Yellowjackets added two in the fourth on a Nate Mulberg double, and then two more in the fifth on an Ethan Sander single and a Steve Pollakov hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Clarkson drew within three on a single from Dan Padrazo (Setaucket, NY) that plated Kinney, and then a three-run homer from Kinney tied the score in the seventh inning. Clarkson added three more in the eighth inning, with two coming on a double from Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY). From there, Jarrod Mattingly pitched through some trouble in the ninth and held on to earn the save for the Knights.

Evan Young (Ghent, NY) picked up his first career victory in relief for Clarkson, while Stephen Cool took the loss for the Yellowjackets. Kinney was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair scored, while John Coleman raced around the bases for three runs. Padrazo also had a pair of hits for the Knights. Ethan Sander continued his hot weekend for Rochester, going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, and Brian Bezek had two hits in five at bats.
