A two-goal, second-period lead would not hold up for the Clarkson University Hockey team on the road Saturday night as the Golden Knights closed out the regular season with a 3-2 loss at defending National Champion Union College in Schenectady, NY.

The Knights will host Rensselaer at Cheel Arena next weekend in a conference first-round playoff series. The best-of-three game series starts on Friday with a 7:00 p.m. faceoff. The teams will meet again in Game 2 on Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. start, and if necessary on Sunday in a deciding Game 3 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for the first-round series can be purchased online or by calling the Cheel Arena boxoffice at (315) 268-7750.

After a scoreless first period at Messa Rink the Knights grabbed a 2-1 lead in the middle frame.

Junior defenseman Kevin Tansey (Hammond, ONT) put Clarkson on the scoreboard first with his second goal of the season at 3:45 with senior Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) and freshman Brett Gervais (Corona, CA) assisting.

Zarbo connected for the Knights' second goal and his team-high ninth tally of the season at 11:29 when he scored unassisted while being trip at the top of the crease.

Union (16-16-2, 8-13-1) rallied back with three unanswered goals to hand Clarkson its ninth straight loss in Schenectady. Ryan Scarfo started things off for the Dutchmen at 15:23 of the second period. Union added two more goals over the final 20 minutes with Max Novak and Tyler Hynes scoring at 3:49 and 11:38, respectively.

The Dutchmen held a slim 27-23 shot advantage. Junior Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) made 24 saves for Clarkson, while Colin Stevens posted 21 stops in the Union crease.

The Knights went scoreless on their lone power play of the night and held the Dutchmen in check on their three man-advantage opportunities.

Clarkson, winless in it last six games (0-5-1), has played in 20 games this season that have been decided by one-goal-or-less, going 5-10-5 in those close decisions.

The Knights have gone 10 years without a win at Messa Rink (0-11-1) and have not won a regular season game in Schenectady since January 13, 2001.
