Knights fall 2-0 against regional soccer power Plattsburgh

Potsdam, NY - For a good portion of the first half, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team was able to hang with Plattsburgh State, but a five-minute window provided the Cardinals with all the offense they would need as the visitors tallied twice midway through the opening period to take a 2-0 victory over the Golden Knights Wednesday night at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson fell to 2-5-1 overall on the season, and will open play this weekend when the it hosts ninth-ranked Hobart College on Saturday. Plattsburgh State, receiving votes in the national poll this week, stayed unblemished at 7-0-0.

Though the Cardinals had a chance in the opening minutes on a hard shot from Pat Shaughnessy, the Knights kept their opposition's offense mostly outside the penalty area. It wasn't until the 30th minute that Plattsburgh got on the scoreboard. Mike Payne send a lofting corner kick from the far side into the box, finding the head of Steve Zacharczyk, which then bounded over to Nick Parrella, who followed with a header of his own for the goal. Less than five minutes later, Clarkson keeper Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT) mishandled a ball at the peripherals of the penalty box and Payne picked up the loose ball. Once he outmaneuvered Spagnolo, the Clarkson keeper committed a foul, giving Payne a penalty kick chance. Payne shot high, just underneath the crossbar and into the goal for a 2-0 Plattsburgh lead, all the Cardinals would need in the contest.

Plattsburgh finished with a 15-7 edge in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kick chances. Spagnolo made five saves for Clarkson, while Andy Heighington also stopped four shots for the Cardinals.
