Knights drop suspended game, but pick up doubleheader sweep at Vassar

Poughkeepsie, NY – Junior David Kinney (Mexico, NY) picked up a win, a save, and delivered four hits as the Clarkson University Baseball team survived some late scares to earn a doubleheader sweep, 4-3 and 8-7, over Vassar College on Sunday afternoon at Prentiss Field.

Clarkson dropped a suspended game to start the day before sweeping the scheduled doubleheader, moving to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the Liberty League. The Brewers dropped to 5-5 and 1-3.

The suspended game didn’t take too long to complete as Vassar was able to pick up the victory in the bottom of the tenth inning. With two outs, Joe Bubar doubled to left field and then came around on Dave Robbins single to right center.

Scheduled for seven innings, the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader once again took extra innings. Vassar scored a pair in the third inning with back-to-back hits from Sal Costanza and Brett Zaziski. In the bottom of the third inning, Clarkson scored three to take the lead. David Kinney, Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) and Justin McInerney (Grand Island, NY) had consecutive singles to load the bases. From there, David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) was hit by a pitch to drive in a run, and then Garrett Russell (Lake George, NY) had the same happen to force in another. Pete Lasecki (Stratford, CT) forced in another run with a fielder’s choice. Vassar tied the score on a caught stealing with runners on first and third in the top of the fourth to tie the game.

Over the course of the final five innings, the pitchers were in command. Clarkson reliever Anthony Farrell (Topsham, ME) didn’t allow a hit in three and a third innings, but walked four, loading the bases in the eighth inning. Kinney came off the corner to relieve Farrell, striking out a pair to get out of the jam. Kinney ended up picking up the win as Clarkson scored the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth inning. Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kinney. Coleman was intentionally walked and the pair of runners moved up on a wild pitch before McInerney was intentionally walked as well. Wixted then walked on five pitches to force in the run.

In game two, Clarkson struck for a run in the first inning when Dan Lenney led off the frame with a double down the right field line and Kinney followed with a double down the right field line. The Knights added a run in the second inning on an RBI-single from Sam Grainger (Bedford, MA). The score would remain 2-0 until the fifth when Clarkson batted around, plating six runs, highlighted by a two-run triple by Scott Morrissey (Troy, NY).

Vassar did not go quietly, as the Brewers recorded five in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Fortunately, the Brewers ran into an out to end the game, as one player was able to score on a sacrifice fly but another was tossed out at third trying to advance.

In the second game, Kinney was 3-for-4 and earned the save. Garrett Russell went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Grainger went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
