POTSDAM--With a pair of goals midway through the first half, the Clarkson University Men’s Soccer team got all of the offense it would need as the Golden Knights pushed their unbeaten streak to four straight games with a 2-1 victory over Elmira College Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights, ranked 10th in the region, improved to 3-1-1 overall, while Elmira lost its first contest of the season, falling to 2-1-1.

Clarkson finally got on the scoreboard at 26:56 when Elliott Carter (Ottawa, ONT) sent a direct kick into the box. Although Mark Secko (Shoreham, NY) tried to head the ball in, but wasn’t able to connect, Andrew Ensinger (Rochester, NY) made the same run just a few yards away and did finish the play, giving Clarkson a 1-0 lead.

Less than four minutes later, the Knights got the game-winner as Tobin Boomer (Louisville, KY) sent a hard pass through the box, finding the foot of freshman Nick Smith (Plaistow, NH), who volleyed the ball out of midair and redirected it into the back of the net at 30:22.

Clarkson out shot Elmira 9-3 in the first half, but the second half was a different story as the Soaring Eagles held a 5-0 edge in chances on goal. One of those attempts made it inside the net midway through the second half. With 19:06 remaining in the contest, Ernesto Valverde blasted a shot from just inside the box with at a tough angle, scoring just inside the bar.

For the final 19 minutes, Elmira supplied some pressure, but little of the offensive push created much in the way of scoring opportunities.

Clarkson finished with a 9-8 edge in shots, but failed to register a corner kick, trailing Elmira in that category 7-0 as the Soaring Eagles gained the corner chances in bunches. Jared Micheller made six saves for Elmira, while Scott Stuart (Ottawa, ONT) made three stops for the Knights.
