Knights close out Florida swing with loss to Whitewater

Winter Haven, FL – Facing a second-ranked team in as many days, the Clarkson University Baseball team dropped a 14-2 decision to Wisconsin-Whitewater Thursday morning at the Chain O Lakes Baseball complex.

The Golden Knights closed out their Florida trip with a 6-3 record, while Whitewater was just beginning its run in Florida and moved to 3-2 on the season.

The Warhawks scored nine in the bottom of the first inning, but the Knights certainly aided in the process. Whitewater had just four hits in the inning to record those nine tallies, taking advantage of hit by pitches, walks, and a two-out error. The Warhawks added a run in the second and three more in the third on a home run.

Clarkson didn’t break up Kyle Stewart’s rhythm until the top of the fourth inning as he had four strikeouts while setting the Knights down in order. An error allowed Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) to become Clarkson’s first baserunner, but the Knights couldn’t cash in following a one-out walk to David Kinney (Mexico, NY). In the fifth, Clarkson broke up the no-hitter as Dan Padrazo (Setaucket, NY) stroked a single to center to lead off the frame, but again the Knights were set down in order to end the threat.

The Knights broke the ice scoring-wise in the sixth, as Jerry Coleman led off with an opposite-field single. After advancing on a wild pitch, Matt Jenack (Massena, NY) drove home Coleman with a single to right-center. Kinney then followed with a double, turning the rightfielder around with a low-liner. Jenack was able to score on an overthrow.

Sophomore Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) came on in relief and slowed the Warhawks down in the middle innings, allowing a three-run homer in the third, but retiring seven of the last eight hitters he faced before being relieved by Justin Rebhun (East Greenbush, NY) in the sixth inning.
