Potsdam, NY - Senior Marques Charlton (Deer Park, NY) buried three 3-pointers in the early going to hit the 1,000-point mark, and beyond, and junior John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) hit a lay up in transition to hit quadrulple digits as the pair each gained their individual milestones in a 77-59 victory for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team over RIT in Liberty League action Friday night.
The Golden Knights improved to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the Liberty League with the win, while the Tigers saw their mark fall to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in conference games.
Clarkson came out hot from all angles in the early going, burying eight 3-pointers in the first half from four different players. Charlton buried three 3-pointers in a 13-0 run in the early going, but it was a lay up in the paint at the 14:45 mark that pushed him past the 1,000-point mark in his career and the Golden Knights never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the game. Though Coleman had converted the basket prior to Charlton's plateau-reacher, he wouldn't reach 1,000 until the 7:40 mark of the half after spending a few minutes on the Clarkson bench. The lay up was typical John Coleman, however, as he beat the defense back for a transition layup after a turnover near midcourt. The two would combine for 25 of Clarkson's 43 first-half points as the Knights shot 53.1% from the floor and turned the ball over just six times, while RIT was held to 44.0% shooting (11-for-25), but committed 13 first-half miscues.
Clarkson pushed its lead to as many as 20 points in the early going of the second half, but the Tigers began to employ a full-court press that temporarily stymied the Golden Knights' offense and allowed RIT to get back within nine points. A Dylan Hodownes (Honeoye Falls, NY) 3-pointer from the wing stopped the RIT rush in its tracks and Clarkson regained a double-digit advantage and the Knights would never allow the margin to be less than 10 for the remainder of the contest.
Charlton finished with 28 points, shooting 10-for-21 from the field, while Coleman added 15 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Hodownes converted 12 points, all on 3-point field goals where he was 4-for-5 from distance, and Felix Abongo (Beacon, NY) tossed in 10 points and six rebounds. Charles McAllister (Olathe, KS) also had a solid all-around game with eight boards and five assists. The Tigers had a pair in double figures as Jameel Balenton and Miguel Lopez each scored 10 points.
