Knights battle Cornell in loss

Despite equaling its season-high for shots and limiting an opponent to under 20 shots for the second straight game the Clarkson University Hockey team fell to Cornell 2-0 at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

The Golden Knights, who lost to Colgate 2-1 on Friday night, fall to 7-10-4 overall and to 4-3-2 in ECAC Hockey, good for a fourth-place tie in the conference standings. The Green and Gold play at Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend.

Clarkson outshot the Big Red 36-19. The Knights were 0-of-5 on the power play and killed off four-of-five Cornell (6-7-2, 4-4) man-advantage opportunities.

In a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Clarkson had a solid effort putting 19 shots on net, its most in a period this season, while holding the Big Red to just six shots on sophomore goaltender Ville Runola (Raisio, Finland).

At 15:34 of the second, Cornell's Matt Buckles tallied his fourth goal of the season on a quick shot from the left circle with Ryan Bliss and Eric Freschi assisting for the only goal the visitors would need.

The Big Red added an insurance goal, a power-play marker 50 seconds into the final frame when Jake Weidner connected from Cole Bardeau and Christian Hilbrich.

Hayden Stewart made 36 saves for Cornell as the Big Red put an end to a four-game winless skid. Runola posted 17 saves for the Knights.

Both teams were without their number one goalies as both Clarkson sophomore Steve Perry (Ligonier, PA) and Cornell's Mitch Gillam did not dress because of an injury. Perry made his 15th start of the season last night against Colgate and played the opening 20 minutes. He did not return for the second period. Gillam, who has play 11 games for the Big Red, was hurt in Saturday morning's practice.
