Knights baseball splits doubleheader with Rochester

With just two weekends left in the regular season, the Clarkson University Baseball team looked to improve their playoff position by earning a split in a Saturday doubleheader against the league leading Rochester Yellowjackets.

Clarkson is now 18-6 overall this season and has an 11-5 conference record while Rochester is 24-9 overall and a league best 15-3 in conference games.

The first game would be a pitcher's duel between sophomore Ted Wilson for Clarkson and Steve Eychner for Rochester. Rochester would get on the board in the top of the second, but that would be the only scoring heading into Clarkson's last at-bats in the top of the seventh. After a two-out single by junior Greg Jasek, it looked like Rochester would complete the shutout when freshman Will Coleman hit a groundball to third, but a throwing error gave Clarkson new life. The next batter, senior Nolan Driscoll, hit a single that scored sophomore Connor Dietrich who had pinch run for Jasek. Wilson was able to retire Rochester in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. After a scoreless top of the eighth for Clarkson, Rochester was able to string together two hits which were good enough to score the game winning run and close out a 2-1 victory. Wilson would finish with seven and two-thirds innings pitched, giving up just two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Clarkson wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second game. Will Coleman hit a bases-loaded single in the top of the first to give Clarkson a 2-0 lead. After Rochester got one run back, Clarkson was able to score their third run when sophomore Paul Ludden scored on an error in the top of the second. They were able to add two more runs in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead. The lead would not hold though, as Rochester scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Clarkson would regain the lead in the top of the sixth when a single by junior Anthony Padrazo scored Ludden to make the score 6-5. Will Coleman pitched the final two innings of the game, allowing zero runs and only one hit to close out the game and pick up his third save of the year. Junior Joe Rooney and freshman Andrew Smith were the other two pitchers for Clarkson. Rooney pitched three and one-third innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Smith pitched one and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on one hit for his third win this season.

The two teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
