Knights baseball splits doubleheader with RIT

A dominant pitching performance in the second game helped the Clarkson University Baseball team split a doubleheader with RIT at Jack Phillips Stadium. The Tigers won the first game by the score of 7-5 while the Golden Knights came away with a 3-1 victory in the second game.

Clarkson is now 14-3 overall on the year and has an 8-2 Liberty League record while RIT is 13-5 and is 7-2 in conference play.

Clarkson looked like they had the first game won after a double by senior John Coleman put the Green and Gold ahead 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh. However, three straight RIT singles to start the inning loaded the bases. After a Clarkson pitching change, RIT scored a run on a hit batter and then their left fielder, Will Gorman hit a grand slam to give RIT a 7-5 lead. RIT would retire three straight hitters in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.

The Golden Knights would take the lead in top of the third in the second game when a single by sophomore Chris Miller drove in the first two runs of the game. RIT got one run back in the bottom of the fourth and were threating to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth with men on first and third and only one out. But freshman Will Coleman was able to strike out Gorman and get the next hitter to line out to left to snuff out the threat. Clarkson added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when a double by Miller scored sophomore Paul Ludden and Coleman closed the door with three straight strikeouts in the bottom half of the frame.

In the first game, sophomore Ted Wilson started and gave up five runs in six innings of work. He allowed eight hits and struck out five batters. Freshman Andrew Smith picked up the loss after giving up two runs in one inning pitched. Junior Joe Rooney started the second game for Clarkson, giving up just a single run in five innings with six strikeouts. Coleman pitched the final two innings, racking up five strikeouts in route to his first collegiate save.

Clarkson will host RPI this weekend with doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday.
