Knights and Yellowjackets battle in another men's soccer defensive struggle

Rochester, NY - For the first time in five seasons no overtime was needed between the Clarkson University Men’s Soccer team and the University of Rochester as the Yellowjackets scored a first-half goal and held off the Golden Knights 1-0 in non-league action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 0-3-1 on the season while Rochester improved to 3-1. Clarkson continues an extended road trip when it travels to Utica on Wednesday to take on SUNYIT.

As has been typical of Clarkson-Rochester meetings in recent memory, the game had a decided defensive edge to it. Clarkson’s Kurt Knolle (East Aurora, NY) had the game’s first shot just four minutes into the game, but the Knights would not get another shot off for the remainder of the first half. Rochester wasn’t in much better shape, getting a veritable flurry with two shots just 88 seconds apart early in the first half, but not getting another attempt for 26 minutes.

Rochester’s fourth shot of the half would break the ice for the Yellowjackets as Seth Davis-Brown produced a goal off a header into the top left of the goal during a scramble in front of the net at 40:09.

The second half was more of the same for both teams, as Clarkson finally broke its streak with no shots when Marco Parisi (Guilford, CT) got one off on the Rochester goal at the 61:39 mark, a stretch of 57:36 of game time. The Yellowjackets didn’t get many chances either, recording only three shots in the second half, with none of them getting close to the Clarkson frame.

Rochester finished the game with a 7-3 edge in shots, but had an overwhelming lead in corner kick opportunities at 10-0. Scott Garfing was called on to make just one save for Rochester, while Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT) didn’t make any saves as only one of the Yellowjackets’ shots was on goal.
