Knights and Saints to clash in ECAC men's hockey quarterfinal round

For the second time in three years the Clarkson University Hockey team has advanced to the quarterfinal round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs. The Golden Knights, guided by fifth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, will battle arch-rival St. Lawrence University in a best-of-three series starting on Friday at Appleton Arena in Canton, NY. The Knights and Saints will meet again on Saturday, and again on Sunday if necessary. All three games are 7:00 p.m. faceoffs.

In other quarterfinal match-ups No. 8 Cornell is at No. 1 Quinnipiac; No. 7 Dartmouth is at No. 2 Yale and No. 6 Rensselaer is at No. 3 Harvard. Winners of the quarterfinal round will advance to the 2016 ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament to be held at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid on March 18-19.

-- ECAC Hockey has announced that upcoming men's games for the league's postseason tournaments will be available worldwide through the technology of BoxCast. The men's quarterfinal round coverage will be streamed beginning Friday, March 11 with live broadcasts of all four quarterfinals series of the Men's Championship Tournament. This marks the ninth consecutive year that postseason action from ECAC Hockey can be viewed by fans around the world. ECAC Hockey tournament games will be available for viewing by a global audience and be aired through www.ecachockey.com. Fans can watch all quarterfinal round games of the ECAC Hockey tournament on mobile devices as well as standard PCs and Macs. The games will be available on iOS devices as well as Androids.

Clarkson continues postseason play after a pair of thrilling 3-2 overtime triumphs against Princeton at Cheel Arena this past weekend. Sudden victory goals by junior defenseman James de Haas proved to be the difference in both contests. Just 65 seconds into the second overtime on Friday, de Haas connected to end the game after 81:05 of playoff action. de Haas made it count again on Saturday, scoring with 2:37 remaining in the first 20-minute extra session to complete the first-round sweep of the Tigers.

Winners of four straight, the Knights, led by senior captain Paul Geiger and assistant captains, Jeff DiNallo, Pat Megannety and de Haas, have reached the 20-win mark for the second time this decade with a 20-13-3 overall record. The Green and Gold finished in a tie for fifth-place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 10-9-3 league slate.

• Clarkson is 12-6-1 against St. Lawrence in the ECAC playoffs, but saw an eight-game streak of league playoff wins over the Saints come to an end in their last postseason meeting. St. Lawrence ended the Knights' 2009-10 season by claiming a very close first-round series in Appleton Arena 2-1 (3-2ot, 3-4ot, 3-2). Previous to the 2010 series the North County foes last played in postseason in 2002 with the Knights claiming the quarterfinal series in Potsdam 2-0 (3-1) and (6-1). Clarkson is 8-2-1 in quarterfinal games against St. Lawrence and is 2-4 in playoff meetings in Appleton Arena. In the overall series, which began in the 1925-26 campaign, the Golden Knights hold an overwhelming 122-68-11 lead. The Route 11 rivals split during the regular season with St. Lawrence winning 3-0 in Canton and Clarkson winning 3-1 in Potsdam.

• The Knights' 20 wins and tie for fifth-place in the ECAC Hockey standings is their best showing since 2013-14 when the Knights posted a 21-17-4 record. Clarkson's most wins in the 2000s was in 2006-07 when the Green and Gold skated to a 25-9-5 record.

• The Knights finished with a 15-2-2 record at Cheel Arena this season (.842 winnng %), their best home mark since going 16-2-2 (.850%) in 2005-06.

• Clarkson is 31-13 in the ECAC Hockey playoffs at Cheel Arena.

• James de Haas (Mississauga, ONT) is the only Clarkson player to skate in all 36 games. He became the first Golden Knight to score back-to-back overtime game-winning goals since Shea Guthrie '09 did it in January 2009. de Haas scored the two biggest goals of the season for Clarkson to keep the Knights' postseason alive. His first game-winner came just 65 seconds into the second overtime on Friday, ending the game after 81:05 of play. de Haas's game-winning goal on Saturday came with 2:37 remaining in the extra session, ending the 3-2 game after 77:23 of playoff action. He is tied for the Clarkson scoring lead from the blueline with 16 points, including 11 assists. de haas was selected as NCAA Hockey's First Star of the Week.

• Clarkson's power play kicked in at just the right time to start postseason play. A lengthy drought on the man-advantage came to an end in a big way for the Knights as they struck twice on the power play to tie Friday's game late in regulation. Clarkson got on the scoreboard when sophomore defenseman Kelly Summers (Golden Lake, ONT) connected for the Knights' first goal at 13:53 of the third, snapping a 0-of-20 scoreless stretch on the power play. With 21.9 seconds left in regulation sophomore Sam Vigneault (Baie-Comeau, QUE) converted another power-play opportunity to tie the game 2-2.

• Senior Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) has started the last 18 games for the Knights, including all 14 league games in 2016, backstopping Clarkson to 10 conference wins in the New Year and the 5th seed in the playoffs. He posted the second-best GAA (1.90) and third-best save percentage (.930) in league play since January 1. He picked up his first two career playoff wins, combining for 60 saves on 64 shots through 158 minutes of action in the sweep of Princeton. Through 23 games overall, he has a .926 save percentage, a 2.01 goals against average and a 14-7-2 record, including one shutout.

• Since missing the first five games of the New Year with an injury, junior Jordan Boucher (St. Therese, QUE) has been one of the Knights' most productive scorers with five goals and nine assists over the past 14 games. Despite playing in only 25 of the 36 games, he is Clarkson's second-leading scorer with 23 points (8-15) and posts a +6 plus/minus rating. Boucher has tallied five points (2-3) over the last three games. He helped to set up both power-play goals in Friday's victory.

• The Knights continue to get needed offense from the blueline with Clarkson defensemen combining to score 18 goals in 2016. Clarkson blueliners accounted for four of the Knights' six goals in the first-round sweep of Princeton.

• Sophomore defenseman Terrance Amorosa (Kirkland, QUE) is tied for the scoring lead from the Clarkson blueline with four goals and 12 assists despite playing in only 25 games. He set up both the power-play goals in Friday's win. Amorosa holds +7 plus/minus rating.

• Freshman defenseman Aaron Thow (Toronto, ONT) tallied the game's first goal in Saturday's win. He has scored all three of his career goals over the past 10 games. Thow boasts a team-best +8 plus/minus rating.

• Sam Vigneault leads the Green and Gold in scoring with 26 points on 12 goals and 14 assists. He is second in the country among ECAC Hockey players for overall game-winning goals with six.

• Jeff DiNallo recorded three assists in the first-round sweep, including the primary assist on both overtime game-winners. Last year's Clarkson MVP has 16 points, including 12 assists, this season with 14 (3-11) coming in 2016.

• Clarkson has enjoyed good success against Top-20 ranked teams in 2016, going 6-3-1 in the New Year against the country's best programs.

• Clarkson's second-year captain, Paul Geiger has led the Knights' stingy defensive effort and contributed nine points (3-6) over the past 17 games. He has tallied 13 points (5-8) in 33 games. Geiger is one of the least penalized players in the conference with just one penalty overall.

• Sophomore center Brett Gervais (Corona, CA) has taken the most faceoffs for the Knights (323-303, 51.6%), is Clarkson's fourth-leading scorer with 17 points (5-12), second on the team in plus/minus at +7 and has 18 blocked shots.

• Sophomore Ben Dalpe (Paris, ONT) scored his second game-winning goal of the February with the deciding score in the 2-1 victory over nationally-ranked Harvard. Dalpe has seven points (4-4) in 27 games and is one of the Knights' top center at the faceoff dot winning 57.1% (178-134) of his draws.

• Clarkson killed off all eight Princeton man-advantage opportunities over the weekend and has allowed just one power-play goal in the opponents' last 22 chances.

• The Knights are 12-1-2 when scoring first, 10-1-1 when on top after the opening period, 12-1-1 when leading through 40 minutes and 17-1 when scoring three-or-more goals.

• Clarkson has been a force in the ECAC since the league was formed at the start of the 1961-62 season. The Knights have participated in 54 of the conference's first 55 postseason tournaments, winning five league championships (1966, 1991, 1993, 1999, 2007). Clarkson owns an 88-74-5 record in the conference playoffs, and is 51-22-4 in quarterfinal games.

The Knights are 12-6-1 against St. Lawrence in conference postseason action, including an 8-2-1 quaterfinal mark. Clarkson has a 14-12-2 postseason record as the fifth seed.

After winning the 2007 ECAC Tournament title, Clarkson has been knocked out of the playoffs in its first postseason action in seven of the following nine years. Last season, Clarkson lost its first-round series vs Rensselaer 2-1 (3-2, 0-5, 5-1) at Cheel. Clarkson defeated Princeton in Potsdam 2-1 (2-3ot, 4-0, 3-2) in 2014. The Knights lost at Brown 2-0 (3-0, 4-3) in 2013, and also lost first-round series at Cheel to Rensselaer in 2012 (5-1, 3-4 3ot, 4-1) and Harvard in 2011 (2-1, 6-4). Clarkson lost at St. Lawrence in 2010 (3-2ot, 3-4ot, 3-2) and fell in Schenectady to Union (5-3, 7-2) in 2009. Colgate edged the Green and Gold in the 2008 quarterfinals at Cheel (0-1, 4-3, 3-2 2ot).

The Knights have advanced to 31 league championship tournaments and have skated in 13 title games, winning its fifth in 2007 with a 4-2 victory over Quinnipiac in the championship game at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Scouting St. Lawrence

The fourth seed in the ECAC Hockey playoffs, the St. Lawrence University Saints finished the regular season with a 17-13-4 overall record and an 11-8-3 conference mark. The Saints, guided by fourth-year head coach Greg Carvel, enjoyed a bye this past weekend. St. Lawrence has gone 1-2-1 in its last four games. The Saints split their final regular-season weekend with a 5-2 win over Dartmouth and a 4-1 loss to Harvard at Appleton Arena on February 26-27. The Saints are 12-6 in Canton this year. Among the top scoring defenseman in the country, Gavin Bayreuther leads the St. Lawrence offense with 10 goals and 27 points. Kyle Hayton has started all 30 games in the Saints' crease with a .933 save percentage, a 2.09 goals against average and three shutouts.

The Saints' November win snapped Clarkson's five-game unbeaten stretch at Appleton Arena.

Jeff DiNallo leads the Green and Gold in scoring against the Saints with four goals and four assists through 10 games of the rivalry. Simon Bessette has three goals and four points in the series, while Pat Megannety has two goals and three points. Sam Vigneault tallied the Knights' first two goals in the win at Cheel in January. Defensemen Kevin Tansey has notched three assists.

Greg Lewis has started seven games in goal against St. Lawrence and posts a .913 save percentage and a 2.34 goals against average for a 4-1-1 record. In 284 minutes of action in the rivalry, Steve Perry is 2-2-1 with a .914 save percentage and a 1.90 GAA.
