(Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.)- Junior Brooke Knight (Madrid, N.Y.) pumped in four goals and freshman Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, N.Y.) made 13 saves in SUNY Canton’s 16-13 loss to Bard College Tuesday night in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.

Knight and Altschuler also had three ground balls apiece. Sophomore Tressa Goolden (Canton, N.Y.) added three goals and three ground balls. Freshman Keeley Rice (Potsdam, N.Y.) contributed two goals, one assist and three ground balls. Freshman Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Ontario) scored twice, and sophomore Devyn Hutcheson (Oswego, N.Y.) and senior Brittani Bessette (Canton, N.Y.) had one goal and one assist apiece.

Tuesday night’s game was a close contest as the Roos won the ground ball battle 27-22, but the Eagles came out on top in shots 38-33 and won 18 draw controls to 12 for SUNY Canton.

Bard built a 2-0 advantage two minutes into the opening half, before Bessette connected from Hutcheson to trim the lead in half with 20:12 on the clock. The Eagles reeled off three straight goals to stretch their lead to 5-1 with 15:59 remaining. Both teams traded goals twice over the next four minutes with Bard coming out on top 7-3 with 6:05 on the clock. Bard scored again with 4:46 left to make the score 8-3, but the Roos closed the half with three straight scores over the final 3:23 to pull within 8-6 at halftime. Knight scored off a free position shot, Rice scored unassisted and Goolden found the back of the net off a feed from Besstte to make it a two-goal affair.

SUNY Canton continued their momentum into the second half with two quick scores from Carroll and Goolden in the first 2:08. Bard answered with a 2-0 run of their own over a one-minute span to go back ahead by two goals, 10-8. The Roos rallied to tie the game for the second time in the final 30 minutes when Knight and Hutcheson scored to deadlock the game at 10-10.

But the Eagles had an answer and fired in four straight goals to take the lead for good with just under 13 minutes remaining in the half. Carroll scored her final goal with 1:27 left, but that’s as close as the Roos could come.

Stephanie LaMont tallied a seven-point night with six goals and one assist to lead Bard, and Maddy Huggins earned her fifth win of the season with eight saves in the cage.

SUNY Canton continues their spring break road trip on Wednesday with a game at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. at 5 p.m.
