Potsdam, NY – Junior setter Kirstie Shurie (LaCanada, CA) averaged nearly 12 assists per set, including the set up to classmate Victoria Kirkemo's (Englewood, CO) 1,000th career kill, to help lead the Clarkson University Volleyball team to an easy sweep of St. John Fisher (25-14, 25-16, 25-16) and SUNY Geneseo (25-20, 25-10, 25-10) on Friday night at the RIT Invitational.
The Golden Knights, ranked 17th in the country in the latest AVCA poll, improved to 9-2 overall with their fourth and fifth straight wins, while St. John Fisher fell to 4-6
with the loss and SUNY Geneseo suffered its first loss to fall to 8-1.
Clarkson hit a robust .436 in the two matches on Friday, battering the Cardinals at a .411 clip and dropped the Knights in three sets with a .461 mark.
Against St. John Fisher, Aishvina Arasu (Brea, CA) clipped the Cardinals with 12 kills and a .400 hitting percentage while Lauren Hutchinson (Spring, TX) hit .471 with nine kills and only one error in 17 swings. Kirkemo crawled to within four kills of 1000 in the first match of the day and had nine kills and 11 digs while Adrienne Walker (Centennial, CO) swung at a .571 rate with eight kills and no errors in 14 swings. Shurie produced 34 assists and four aces, while Hutchinson contributed three more aces.
Versus the previously unbeaten Geneseo Knights, Clarkson's offense was running brilliantly in the final two sets with 33 kills and only three errors in 57 attempts (.526 hitting percentage). Freshman Rachael Aird (East Syracuse, NY) hit a blistering .722 with 13 kills and no errors in 18 swings along with two blocks, while Arasu added in 10 kills. Kirkemo picked up eight more kills with no errors in 18 attempts to surpass the 1000 kill mark, becoming the eighth member of Clarkson's 1000-kill club. Katrina Lane (Seattle, WA) added in nine more kills as Clarkson swung for 48 overall in only 89 attempts. Kirstie Shurie produced a double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs. Lane also added five block assists and Adrienne Walker added in five total blocks, including one solo effort.
