In a season with plenty of impressive candidates, senior David Kinney (Mexico, NY) and freshman John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) walked away with the Liberty League Player of the Year and Liberty League Rookie of the Year awards, respectively, for the Clarkson University Baseball team as the conference's all-star honors were announced on Wednesday.

Kinney repeated top honors as the player of the year, also winning in 2011, with an historic season for the Golden Knights. Kinney led the league in hitting at .467 despite playing with a balky shoulder for the past month of the season, and also tied for the league lead with 63 hits. A two-way player, Kinney also led the conference in complete games, finishing all but one of his seven conference starts. Overall, Kinney finished as Clarkson's all-time leader in hits (198), doubles (51), home runs (19), total bases (314), extra-base hits (74), batting average (.402), and slugging percentage (.637).

Though the Knights season is over, Kinney currently ranks fifth in the country in hitting and is 11th in on-base percentage (.531). He also is in the top 50 in slugging percentage (.667).

Coleman became the first athlete ever at Clarkson to win rookie of the year honors in two different sports, winning the award for top newcomer in both basketball and baseball in 2012. On the diamond, Coleman started all 39 games at shortstop and made only 10 errors, including just seven in the final 37 games, and led the conference in assists with 130. He batted .324 and came within one hit of tying the first-year mark for safeties at Clarkson, adding in 13 extra-base hits and 22 RBIs.

Besides the two major award wins, Clarkson had five players named to the all-star squad. Kinney was a Liberty League First-Team unanimous selection at first base for the Knights, while junior Bryan Chudy (Goshen, NY), sophomore David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) and senior Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) were named to the Liberty League Second-Team. John Coleman was a Liberty League Honorable Mention All-Star.

Chudy, a right-handed pitcher, pitched Clarkson's lone shutout of the season and led the team in starts (10) while ranking second with four complete games. He struck out 38 hitters in 55 innings and came away with four victories while posting a team-best 3.93 ERA. Wixted, an outfielder, spent the majority of the season in the clean-up spot for Clarkson, and batted .341 with 23 RBIs, which ranked second on the team. He also swiped 19 bases in 21 chances. Jerry Coleman, who was picked as the all-star team's utility player, spent his senior season as a two-way player, making nine starts and striking out 47 batters, the third-best figure in the conference, over 50 innings. At the plate, Coleman drove in 21 runs and was flawless in 13 steal attempts, finishing among Clarkson's all-time leaders in hits, runs, RBIs, stolen bases and numerous other categories.
